When she opened her mouth, Cirina fully intended to say Saejith would be fine if she left for a little while, but then she hesitated, “I… think the hour would be fine, but I’m worried he’d panic when we /betweened/. He’s not even quite a day old yet; I don’t want to push him.” She shook her head, but she looked reluctant about it, “I’ll be alright; they’ll probably bring me my things later or tomorrow. Everyone was probably busy with Threadfall.”
}:You’d be fine with Aeoluth; he seems very safe, and I can hear you anywhere,:{ Saejith protested.
**I really don’t know if you could hear me the whole time. We’ll try it some other time, ok?** She felt the blue’s skepticism at her worry, but he gave in without a protest. “I always expected baby dragons to be more panicky, from the way they harp on us keeping calm and not engaging in any funny business, but Saejith just seems happy to go along with everything. And kind of… smug? He thought his breakfast was the best out of everyone’s. It was all just buckets of meat.”
"Well, you're stuck across the world from home, so I guess you had to have something going for you.." O'rosin said. He was going to be very annoying to R'lor as soon as he got home to try and speed along the process. "And send Digger over if Oriene or anyone wants a dragonride over."
“Thank you.” Cirina chewed on her lip, brow furrowing, “Weylinghood flies by, right? Before I know it he’ll be all grown up and I can just pop off back home, right? Everyone is nice, but…” she let the ‘it isn’t home’ stay unsaid. “And ugh my ex is here. Don’t know how that happened, last I heard he didn’t even really want a dragon.”
"Oh, _no_." O'rosin said. "And isn't your current guy here, too? How is that working out?"
“Well, I have managed to not run into him, so that’s going great so far. Maybe he won’t notice I’m here…” Cirina sighed. “This wasn’t supposed to happen like this. I mean, as soon as I saw Saejith looking into the Stands I HOPED, but it’s complicated. And messy. “ She paused, “And the lake makes it smell… green here.”
O'rosin frowned. "Isn't that the lack of salt?"
Cirina blinked at O’rosin, “Is it? I was raised by dragonriders, not fishermen,” she said. “I just thought it was weird. Nice to visit, but I never expected to wake up to it.” She glanced over towards Saejith and then took a deep breath, “But it’ll be worth it. It’s worth it.”
"Do you think they'll let you transfer back to Dolphin Cove once you graduate? Or will you want to stay here?"
Cirina took a deep breath, the type of deep breath of someone trying to keep calm, and her next words were rushed again, “I don't know how it works. You have to ask your wingleader to transfer and then I think they ask the Weyrleaders? But what if Barrier Lake doesn't want to give up a dragon they just trained and what if N’vanik doesn't want me, and what if we just can't because we'd have learned how to do everything here but all that everything is different at Dolphin Cove. But I don't like it here; I don't want to live here.” She gave a nervous look towards Saejith. “It smells funny and it's cold and there's no beach. A lake can't have a beach. But that also means no tsunamis.”
The little blue stopped his hopping and looked at his rider, but his answer was the same mild, }:It'll all be fine; we're going to be great,:{ that he said whenever his rider’s mind started buzzing.
Lowering her voice as if that could stop him from hearing, she said, “He just says everything will be fine, but he can't know that; he doesn't know anything!”
}:I know you're the best. Everything will be fine,:{ Saejith said wisely before tripping over his own wing.
Oh. Oh no. O'rosin pulled her into another awkward little hug. "That change is hard no matter how far it is. Who knows, by the time he's big enough to fly you might have warmed up to the place. It's different, but it's not like you _can't_ go to the beach, once Saejith is big enough. You just can't walk out to it anymore."
}: Everything will be fine, but you will be very far away.:{ Aeoluth said mournfully. }: We will have to visit a lot, won't we? And we'll bring Skadith.:{
}:Yes, bring Skadith. Bring all our friends,:{ Saejith said enthusiastically.
"And Aeoluth insists we'll be here a lot, so you may not even notice there's a lake and not an ocean."
Cirina returned the hug, “You’d better visit all the time. It was your turn to help me study.” Somehow, she doubted Aydhara was going to be as useful. Pulling away, she went over to Aeoluth, giving him a hug when he turned his head towards her. “And you have to remember to tell Aeoluth stories when I’m not there. You know he likes story time.”
"I won't forget." O'rosin lied. His reading wasn't good enough for him to read to Aeoluth like she did, and he certainly didn't think he was good enough at this dragonrider thing to help her study, but he'd try. "I'm sure you'll get the hang of it fast. You've been waiting turns for this."
“You sound like Saejith. He says the other dragons are silly for not picking me because I know everything. Which is a lot of pressure from something that still trips over his own limbs.” Giving Aeoluth one last squeeze, she straightened and nodded (mostly to herself), “But you're right. I’ve been working on this forever. We’ll be fine.”
"Your greatest obstacle will be treating Saejith like a blue and not a brown." O'rosin said so deadpan it might not have been a joke, "Gonna have to get used to flying in a different part of the formation."
Cirina scowled, “Oh no. My flashcards will be useless. They were so much work, too. All the more reason you have to help me study.” She glanced back towards the barracks, where some of her classmates seemed to be lining up. “I’ll send you my schedule and we can figure out a good time to visit. You can even bring R’fayne… after all, he knows where blues go.”
