Eventually, Cirina finished quizzing O’rosin on the latest news from home. “Anyway, there’s someone else I wanted you to meet. One of the weyrlings, L’leb, is having some trouble with his brown’s ‘impulse control’. Although, since he hasn’t actually mauled him yet, I think the dragon probably isn’t just impulsive and clumsy. But he asked for help and I said I had a friend who might have some advice.” Cirina pointedly hooked her arm in O’rosin’s, effectively trapping him.
"I don't know how much help I'll be with that- oh." O'rosin took her arm and let himself be led without further protest. "Wait, like Leoleb? Like that ex-boyfriend of yours?"
“Well, yes, but that’s not why I’m asking you. He asked me for help, and I have enough on my hands.” She gestured back towards Saejith, who was currently trying to play with Aeoluth.
Saejith briefly interrupted his attempts to pounce on Aeoluth’s tail to reach out to Aurelth, }: Aeoluth and his rider are here. My rider wanted to introduce them to yours.:{
}:Oh?:{ Aurelth sounded rather surprised to hear from Saejith. He had to go fishing through L’leb’s mind to even begin to remember what in the world he was talking about, but once he had caught himself back up, he thought it strange that Saejith’s rider would actually follow through on the offer. She must have been quite dutiful.
}:Where should we meet you?:{
}:We’re right outside.:{ Saejith sent back the image of the barracks from where they were.
}:Welcome, great Aeoluth,:{ Aurelth greeted the larger brown as he and L’leb exited the barracks to join them. The little brown sidled up to Aeoluth and nuzzled his leg.
L’leb eyed Aurelth but decided to pick his battles. He extended a hand to O’rosin.
“Thanks for agreeing to speak with me.” Once again, L’leb kept his face expressionless and betrayed no emotion in his tone. Best to avoid building any sand sculptures lest they crumble and collapse.
Aeoluth was so focused on the blue chasing his tail that he jumped out of his hide when he felt something brush up against a foreleg. He accidentally smacked Aurelth away.
"Aeoluth!" O'rosin exclaimed.
}: He scared me! :{
It took O'rosin another beat to notice the hand extended out to him, and he tentatively took it with the hand not on Cirina's arm. "Hey, L'leb. Uh…Cirina said you wanted help?"
L’leb tensed up until Aurelth made it clear that he was not injured. When the brown seemed utterly unfazed, he relaxed. Though Aurelth did keep his distance now.
“You have experience dealing with impulsive behavior?”
Cirina snickered (again, once it was clear Aurelth wasn’t hurt), “Impulsive behavior like accidentally knocking smaller things over seems to be a brown specialty."
"Aeoluth isn't great about thinking before he acts." O'rosin agreed. "Something we share. Your-"
}: Aurelth.:{
"...Aurelth seems to be doing just fine now, though? What problems are you having?"
“Sometimes he gets fun little ideas… and just does them before thinking about it. He tossed me across the Sands when I Impressed. And he bowled me over mimicking Saejith when Cirina offered to ask you for your advice,” said L’leb. “It’s not easy to talk him out of it, as he's usually already done it before I know it’s coming.”
"Why are you trying to talk him out of it? Tell him no, and if he can't do it then isn't going to be allowed to go play." O'rosin said. "It takes a lot of reminding for Aeoluth and he still messes up, but he's doing much better when he has rules to repeat."
“Well, that's the thing-- I’m not trying to talk him out of it, because he already did it. Whatever it is.” L’leb folded his arms. Not going to be allowed to play, as if L’leb could stop him.
“You’re at least telling him it was bad and he shouldn’t do it again, though, right?” Cirina suddenly worried maybe the problem was easier than it had seemed and O’rosin was being bothered for nothing. “I tell Saejith he can’t have bed time stories if he doesn’t behave.”
“Yes.” At least, he had been. The first few times, L’leb had assumed Aurelth would get the picture on his own based on the outcomes, but he kept doing whatever popped into his head nevertheless. “Just as I said, he does whatever pops into his head. He doesn't take time to think about what I told him the last time, until after he’s already done it.”
"It sounds like you need to watch him more, then." O'rosin said. "Remind him of the rules before he does anything. It's exhausting at first because you have to be 'on' all the time. Aeoluth also isn't swayed much by punishment." He shot Cirina a small smile-- Saejith at least sounded like he was much better behaved than Aeoluth was.
L’leb held in a frustrated sigh. He had too many things to worry about to be constantly on. But he supposed he was going to have to figure it out. This was his life now, whatever he had once believed possible.
“He seems a little jumpy. Aeoluth, that is. Is that part of what makes him, ah… unpredictable?” Jumpy did not describe Aurelth in the slightest-- though perhaps he might be a touch more careful with dragons he did not know after that thwacking.
L’leb suspected he would not.
"No." O'rosin said a little too hotly, quick to come to Aeoluth's defense. "He's a little over a turn old, and he's never interacted with dragonets before. He was trying to be careful with Saejith and Aurelth crept up on him. That's what I mean when I say you need to watch him more. Tell him that he'll get a smack by accident if he startles a dragon."
“A real dragon, hm?” L’leb nodded. He thought he could see why O’rosin and Cirina got along. “Aurelth seems to have learned his lesson.” He nodded toward them, where Aurelth was still at least an Aeoluth-arm’s-length away. “At least with Aeoluth. I have a feeling he's going to need to get smacked in the head by each dragon in turn before he remembers why it's a good idea to keep his distance in general.”
“You're going to have to remember for him and remind him,” Cirina said, “it’s our job to keep them safe while they're little like this; you can't expect him to know or remember.”
