O'rosin

O'rosin

“Right.” L’leb nodded. As much as he wanted to roll his eyes at the absurdity of it all, he had to admit Cirina was right. This was one of the things the weyrlingmasters had repeated endlessly to _him_ when he had been a Candidate before. He could hardly be frustrated with Aurelth when he was doing the exact same thing. And he had no excuse.

Dragons did not remember things. L’leb had to be Aurelth’s memory-- especially now, when he really could get hurt sneaking up on a full-grown dragon.

“Right. Sorry.”

"They don't recognize danger the way we do." O'rosin continued, "Or Aeoluth doesn't, anyway. And the memory also means he doesn't remember pain on his own, unless it's recent. It'll become second nature to remind him eventually, but it takes a lot of time to get there." His gaze lingered to the threadscore scarring that now dappled the brown's hide.

“Saejith, stop trying to chew on his tail,” the little blue stopped and bounced back to his rider as she moved towards Aeoluth’s face, offering scratches. “And these days Aeoluth is a delight,” Cirina gushed, as if she had ever had a different opinion on the brown. “So it’s worth the effort.”

“Hm.” It seemed Aeoluth was perfectly capable of refraining from whacking at least one baby dragon. Aurelth still did not seem horribly perturbed, though. “Anything worth having is, I suppose. No, certainly, it is.” L’leb nodded resolutely. No hedging.

Aurelth was at home in L’leb’s thoughts. Surely, every dragon was. But it seemed it should be easy enough to ensure that the little brown encountered memories of the outcomes of his impulses. Then again, how long had it taken O’rosin? He wondered whether he and Aurelth had similar scars to look forward to.

}: We were playing! :{ Aeoluth protested, though he extended his chin for scratches as if he'd never once been shown affection.

**And one solid smack would have sent him flying.** O'rosin chastised. To L'leb, he said, "It's not about whether it's worth it. A bad habit on the ground becomes a lethal mistake in Threadfall."

If that was not a measure of its value, L’leb did not know what would be, but he doubted very much he would get anything good out of needing to be right and arguing semantics.

“Too true. Did Aeoluth’s score take a long time to heal?”

“It felt like forever,” Cirina chimed in, as if she had a right to, “Poor Aeoluth was so miserable. He made these sad sounds, but he was very good about it,” she spoke fondly of the brown, though really she’d missed the worst of the sad sounds, certainly.

O'rosin frowned at L'leb. "The worst of it took about a month to be fully ready for Threadfall again, but it was because we were dealing with a bad sprain as well. You get put back into the Wings once the wound is healed enough to /between/."

“I hope Aurelth can be like him…” If L’leb noticed the frown, he gave no indication. He was absolutely certain he would not be clever or skilled enough to keep his lovely boy from getting scored. But if Aurelth was like Aeoluth, then he might not hold it against him.

O'rosin's expression didn't change. "Don't hope he's like Aeoluth. Make him better. The 'score wasn't bad luck. He went out of formation chasing Thread and nearly killed us."

“You take that back. Aeoluth is the best boy!” It was instinct by now. A tiny baby snort drew her attention, and she quickly amended, “... One of the best boys.” That seemed sufficient to satisfy Saejith, who yawned before settling himself down in the sun. “Oh no, don't nap out here. You're too big to carry now.”

O'rosin held up a hand in mock surrender. "He's only as good in Threadfall as I am. I didn't keep him in formation, and we paid for it."

L’leb shrugged. It was not worth it to try to explain what he meant. It was not going to do anything but annoy people he wanted to be friends with. Well, further annoy them, anyway.

}:L’leb thinks he must be very much like Aeoluth’s rider. In many ways, if not the ones he thinks must be most important,:{ said Aurelth to Saejith. After all, Cirina liked O’rosin.

Aurelth snuggled next to Saejith.

}:Oh, I don’t think they’re much alike at all. Yours can read,:{ Saejith said positively. }:That’s good, though. It was a lot of work making sure Aeoluth graduated,:{ Saejith said, as if he remembered it personally.

}:Perhaps it is only in the unimportant ways after all,:{ Aurelth conceded. }:Or perhaps I am the one who shall need the help!:{ He giggled as though this were the most ridiculous thing anyone had ever said.

}:I don’t think that’s funny at all. You don’t want to be held back,:{ Saejith said.

Cirina sighed, “We should get them inside before they fall into their afternoon stupor.”

“Right. Thank you again, O’rosin,” said L’leb.

"Anytime." O'rosin said, "C'mon, Aeoluth. Say goodbye to Saejith and Cirina- we need to get to bed."
