"Dear Lord Delmar~
I appreciate the kind letter you sent me in regards to your daughter, Mardelle. The small portrait was lovely, and I am sure that she will make someone a fine wife someday. With her great skills in flower arrangements, I'm sure she'll have no trouble whatsoever in catching a suitor's eye. However, I must inform you that I am at long last engaged to one of the ladies of the Vintner Hall. Please pass on to your daughter my warmest wishes for her happiness in the future.
Yours faithfully, Master Daigoro Hallsecond of the Amber Hills Vintner Hall"

Bronze Wort looked over his shoulder as Daigoro picked up the portrait the Holder had so thoughtfully sent. The little flit took one look at the severe looking young girl, clutching a vase of flowers in her hand, and hissed. **Yeah, that's what I was thinking too. I wonder if she's ever smiled...** Daigoro rolled his letter up and carefully tied it to the little flit's foot. He fixed in his mind the picture of the young woman and asked Wort to deliver it straight. **Hurry back now. There are several more to go...**
Flexing his fingers once more before unrolling the neatly tied hide that topped the small pyramid on his desk.

"My Dear Master Daigoro -
I am Vanrit, a Master at the Healer Hall. I have heard that you have moved your Hall to a new location at Amber Hills after the most unfortunate destruction of your Hall at Amethyst Cliff. I was so sorry to hear of your misfortune, as was my seventeen-turn-old daughter, Drivana. When she heard that you would be moving to a new home all alone, she resolved to aide you in your time of need. How better could she assist you, she wisely reasoned, than as your wife.
As you may discern for yourself, my daughter is very mature for her age, and would make a wonderful wife for a Hallsecond. She is reputed as a local beauty and is well versed in the feminine arts of sewing, cooking, and cleaning and is, as many people so aptly describe her, of an adventurous and spirited nature. As if giving you my most prized child were not enough, I would also include my volumes on the study of Urology for you as part of her dowry. These texts are quite rare, and a complete set is almost an impossibility, making it highly valuable, one which has taken me the whole of my lifetime to collect. If you would agree to accept my daughter's offer of marriage, I would send both her and those volumes to you as soon as possible.
Yours Sincerely -
Vanrit, Master of Urology"

**'Adventerous and spirited'? Willing to send both her and a valuable gift without so much as a meeting? Someone received some bad news at the healers...** the Hallsecond chuckled.
Picking up his pen he pulled out a clean sheet and began to write.

"Dear Master Vanrit -
I appreciate the concern both you and your daughter have for my well-being. It certainly shows she has a very loving nature that she would share herself so willingly with a man she does not know. I'm sure her caring heart as well as her adventurous spirit should help her catch a man's eye soon," **If not several...**
"Regretfully, I cannot accept her kind proposal or your generous offer of the volumes of books on the subject of Urology, though they do sound utterly fascinating. I am truly sorry, but I have recently become engaged to a lady of the Hall. Good luck to you and your daughter. I hope she will find happiness and will be blessed with several children in her future marriage," **As I'm sure you've already some evidence she is fertile...**

He quickly signed it and grabbed an ink blot. Daigoro was not surprised when Wort popped in from /between/ soon after, but was rather taken off-guard when a small green popped up after him. It certainly wasn't Fey or Ivy with that embossed leather collar. She patiently allowed him to untie the message from her leg. Curiously he unrolled it:
~*~
"My Dear Master Daigoro -
This is Lord Delmar. I just received the letter that your bronze flit delivered to my daughter. Forgive me, but I believe I did not inform you of all my daughter's finer points. Though she is certainly well known for her flower arranging, she also is an accomplished rider, which would come in handy in the Amber Hills area. Mardelle also is a fine cook and has taken several lessons in playing the harp from our Harper.
He praises her as one of his finest students. She is of a sweet and docile nature and would be a good match for any Hallsecond.
Perhaps I also failed to mention that Jaspar Hold is known not only for our semi-precious stones, but our fine cucumbers and fingerroots.
Though we are still considered a 'minor' holding, we house more than one hundred and fifty people and have aspirations to a major Hold of our own someday. I think you would find the match advantageous politically, and I would hope that you would reconsider our proposal.
Respectfully, Lord Delmar Holder of Jasper Hold"

He glanced over at the little green that had faithfully brought the letter. She didn't look like she was going anywhere until she got an answer. Well, he was nothing if not persistent, Daigoro thought as he pulled out another sheet of paper.

"Dear Lord Delmar -
I am sorry, but as I said before, I am now engaged to one of the ladies of the Vintner Hall. I'm sure your daughter Mardelle is a lovely young woman who will find a very advantageous match. However, I cannot accept your proposal as I already have a fiancé. If I were not engaged, of course I would be happy to consider the proposal as your daughter sounds quite charming and your Hold very promising. Unfortunately, it is too late. Again, please accept my warm wishes for your daughter's health and happiness.
Master Daigoro, Hallsecond of the Amber Hills Vintner Hall"

He tied the letter back to the green flit's foot and gave her a quick pat before she launched herself up and into /between/. Sighing, he reached for another letter from the top of the pile. Unrolling it, he was happily surprised to see it was from a friend!
~*~
"Hello there Daigoro!
How are you doing, old mate! It's me, Leego! You remember, from the Tavern. I hear you were in a terrible quake a while back! Bad business, that. I asked all the travelers and runners that pass through here for news of you and the Hall. They told me that you survived just fine and that you are all moving over to Amber Hills.
So what's new? Besides that you were made Hallsecond. I couldn't believe it! My old mate a Hallsecond. And here I am, still plodding away down in the Tavern brewery making keg after keg of your special brew. You're still famous in these parts, I hope you know. We all jump on any news of you that comes this way.
And what's this I hear about you not yet being married? I would have figured a woman would have snatched you up long ago. Even my Rokka fell in love with your big brown eyes for a spell. But I am happy to say we are still happily married even after these twenty turns. You really should find a woman and settle down, mate. And that's why I'm writing.
See, I have a sweet eighteen-turn-old that is the spitting image of her mother, and I can think of no one better to marry Leeka off to than my old pal Daigoro..."
~*~
"Shells, Leego, not you _too_," Daigoro groaned.
He pulled yet another sheet and began scribbling away.
~*~
"Hello there, old Leego!
Its good to hear news of you and your family. The rumors are true, I am a Hallsecond and we have moved over to Amber Hills. However, I have found a lovely girl who has agreed to marry. Her name is Cinale, and we've known each other for turns. I think you'd really like her agree she's the perfect fit for me. Not to say that it wouldn't be an honor to become a member of your family. I'm sure Leeka is a lovely and...
~*~
Daigoro scrapped the pen across the page when a green flit with a leather band popped out of /between/ right above his head. "Shards!"
The flit was all too familiar. With a slight frown, and heart still racing from the fright, he pulled the message from the creature's leg.

"My Dear Master Daigoro -
Lord Delmar again. I believe the harper's portrait of my daughter didn't quite do her justice. She has a lovely little smile and is nicely built. Her hips are wide and perfect for birthing so she would be able to provide you with many fine children. Both her mother and I are strong and healthy, so I can assure you that she comes from good, strong stock. I am sure you would agree if you would but meet her face to face. Did I mention that she also has been taking lessons for...
~*~
Another flit, this time a blue with a matching collar, flew screeching into the room. "Oh for the love of..." Daigoro was getting really sick of this Lord Delmar and his daughter, whatever her name was! The nerve of the man trying to sell a Hallsecond his daughter like a herdbeast. "'Hips wide enough for birthing'... 'good strong stock'..." he spat as he untied the latest message. Wort picked up on his human's mood and hissed at the new comer who quickly flew up to the rafters to escape the man and his bronze. "All right, what now? Do you have volumes on Urology too?"
~*~
"My dear Master Daigoro -
This is Lord Delmar again. Please disregard my last letter to you. I apologize. In speaking to my own Vintner assigned to Jaspar Hold, I learned that you are indeed engaged to a lady of the Hall. Forgive me, but as you can imagine, I was thinking you were only trying to politely reject our proposal, and I wanted to be sure you had all the facts before you made up your mind. Now that I know that you are indeed engaged, I of course withdraw the proposal and wish you and your future wife all happiness.
However, if I may be so bold as to ask you to do me a quick service.
Journeyman Hokate informs me that Hallmaster Fielton tragically lost his wife in the earthquake. This is indeed sad news, but I hope that I can offer him some comfort. If you could pass on the portrait of Mardelle to the Hallmaster...

The letters and the portrait both promptly found their way into the trash bucket.
