"Master Eilomar," said the Hallsecond politely as she passed the Master Harper on her way to her office. "It's a nice day today, don't you think?"
"Too hot," the master of vocals grunted. A fat man like him suffered from the heat more than others.
"You think?" she said slowing her pace to match his.
"I feel it," Eilomar replied and wiped sweat from his round face.
"But a summer's day like this? They were a rarity where I grew up. It's nice to see the sun."
Eilomar grunted. As far as the fat singer was concerned, the sun could go /between/. "I rather miss the cooler climate of Emerald Falls."
"Each to his own," she said. "Might I ask how plans are going for Turn's End?" At least if she spoke to him about something such as that she might just get some sort of conversation going with the Master Harper.
"I'm trying to find enough dragonriders who can sing and play for the ensemble," Eilomar replied, his tone pessimistic.
"I'm sure you'll find plenty. Take that young brownrider, I think his name is M'tias. He had a couple of turns at the Harper Hall before he was searched."
The master harper just gave a non-commital grunt. Eilomar didn't feel like chatting with her. He resented the hallsecond, not as much as her being a woman, but mostly because he had wanted that spot as hallsecond.
"You could try asking some of the Harpers who were posted here, or who trained here before we arrived. Journeywoman Karaleigh has a good head on her shoulders and might be able to help you find a few more riders."
"I keep that name in mind," Eilomar promised.
"I tell you it won't be too many turns before she has the knots of a Master Harper. She really has a lot of talent as a teacher."
"Whatever," Eilomar grunted. He couldn't care less about some weyrtrained one who was just teaching little kids. Beneath his dignity, that stuff. He taught vocals and singing to the apprentices. Much more challenging in his mind.
It really was hard work talking to this man, perhaps she ought to just leave him too it. "I should get back to the hidework," she said after a moment.
"Right," Eilomar grunted and then remembered the thing called common courtesy and added: " Good day to you, hallsecond."
"And to you too, Master Eilomar."
