Q'vettan

Q'vettan

Imbeth’s muzzle rose from her kill bloodstained and gory and she screamed at the woman standing white-knuckled at the edge of the feeding pens. The senior queen’s hide amber hide glowed in the afternoon light as she mantled her wings and hissed.

**Blood. Only.** Her rider locked eyes with her dragon and they stared at each other for a long, tense moment as they fought.

Imbeth was the one to break. The queen flexed her wings and leaped into the sky, the downdraft causing the grass to whip and shake like they were in a hurricane, as around her dragons lifted from the cliffside and surrounding fields to begin their chase.

Xmrenth, who had been watching the queen closely from his ledge, was one of the first into the skies as she leapt skyward. There was no consultation or warning for his rider, who had been working in his office, and he received no hindrance from the Wingleader, only acceptance as they melded into one mind with one goal.

“There she goes,” H’stre remarked with a low appreciative whistle even as his own Daith took off at dizzying speed. This disorienting moment -- half himself, half his dragon -- was like the purest heartbeat of inebriation before he lost all control. But even if he feared who he was when he made terrible life choices, he knew that Daith, his anchor, would never cross that same destructive line.

**This time. Come on!** F’lin closed his eyes and willed Seneth forward through the sky. The bronze dragon followed Imbeth and his focus narrowed to nothing but the queen, the sky and the wings of his competitors. This time, they’d win. This time, the Weyr would be theirs.

}:Fly with me!:{ Imebth’s powerful wings drove her skyward where the lakeside wind had a bite and the air was clear. She levelled out with a snap of her wings and shot along the shoreline, the thermals and unsteady air rising from the beaches filing her wingsails. It was a glorious day to fly.

Tzenketh watched her blood from afar, his bulk comfortable and cozy in the grass atop the Weyr in a space more commonly taken by Tymborikath. It was not the interest of a dragon looking to chase. A curiosity, certainly, at the noise and the newness of it, but he did not rise to chase after her.

Q'vettan made a sharp, disgusted sound, scrubbing a hand down his face before fixing his gaze upon his dragon.

**Up.**

}: Imbeth bullies me.:{ Tzenketh complained. Not entirely a lie, but definitely an exaggeration.

Q'vettan's jaw tightened. **You will not lie there like a herdbeast while every other male in the Weyr takes to the sky. Up. Move. Now.**

Tzenketh let out a low, offended rumble, his tail lashing once in agitation before, with monumental reluctance, he gathered himself and leapt into the air after them.

Imbeth zigzagged down the coastline, then doubled back toward the weyr. The water reflected her golden belly back at her like a second sun and as she exalted in the feeling of the wind and the flattery of the bronzes that fluttered in her wake like leaves in the wind. One came close - Daith - but she saw and shot skyward to evade him, her powerful wings taking her skyward, closer to the sun.

All good things had to come to an end, though. Imbeth’s muscles burned and she could feel her rider dimly, urging her to make a choice.

She angled her wings and cut through the pack of bronze dragons, taunting them as they lunged for her, and found her mate. She fell, her neck twined with Tzenketh’s, as Thiseta reached blindly for Q’vettan and let him carry her to the nearest flight cot.
