Setting a Date

Writers: Eimi, Emma
Date Posted: 15th September 2006

Characters: Penryn, Carlan
Description: Penryn asks the Hold's Harper to marry he and Ryalane
Location: Garnet Valley Hold
Date: month 13, day 8 of Turn 3

"Ah, Carlan. Thank you for coming. Please, have a seat," Penryn smiled
as he indicated the chair across from him.

"It was no problem at all," said Carlan as he took the offered seat.

"I have need for your services, Carlan. It's a... personal matter."
The steward had often worked with the Harper on Hold's buisness, so he
felt the need to differentiate.

"I see," said the Harper, curiosity edging into his voice.

Penryn took a deep breath to steel his resolve. Everything was becoming
so... official. "After the Turn's End celebration is finished, perhaps
before the next restday, I would like you to marry Ryalane and myself."

This was the first he'd heard of anything like that, and he was sure
that his face must show it. "Are you sure?"

"I wouldn't ask you if I wasn't sure, Carlan," Penryn said with a slight
frown. "Why do you ask?"

"It seems so sudden," said the younger man. "Hasty marriages, sometimes
they don't work out, I've seen it."

The Steward knew what the journeyman meant, but this was just not that
kind of marriage. "Ryalane and I are not rushing into a hasty romance.
This is... an arrangement that will benefit us both."

"I'm sure that you understand I meant no offence, I'd not be doing my
duty if I didn't ask," explained the harper.

"Well, this isn't the first marriage for either of us." Penryn was
pretty sure they accepted the risk. Neither of them planned to be going
anywhere any time soon, and both knew what was expected of them. "We
have made the decision after careful consideration."

"Then I'd be happy to perform the ceremony, as soon as you and your
chosen lady would like."

"Thank you. I appreciate that," Penryn said with a forced smile. "The
sixth day of the first month. Are you free?"

"I can make myself available."

"Thank you, Carlan. It's going to be a rather quiet affair." Though it
technically was cause for celebration, he had a feeling Ryalane wanted
to revel in it even less than he did.

"Perhaps just yourselves and a few selected witnesses?" suggested the
Harper.

"Yes, that's what we have planned. Lord Ishek will be there, and...
perhaps Lady Thalia. But I'm not sure." Penryn hadn't even thought
about asking her to the wedding. Part of him wanted her to be there,
and yet part of him screemed it would be wrong. He'd have to think on
that... "But no one else of rank. It will not be too formal."

"I understand completely."

Penryn tried to think back to his first wedding to Jaika. What else did
Carlan need to know? "And of course, our families will not be involved,
so there will be no contracts to draw up or be signed."

The harper nodded. "Is there anything I can do to help with the
arrangements?"

"Nothing above what is normally done to prepare for a wedding," Penryn
said with a small smile. "I appreciate the offer though."

"Then I'll see the both of you on the 6th day of the first month."
