Minimal Distraction

Writers: Bree, Eimi

Characters: Kenza, U'kaiah
Description: Kenza comes to the infirmary to talk to U'kaiah about the wing, and to chastise him because she can...
Location: Dragonsfall Weyr
Date: month 7, day 22 of Turn 3

U'kaiah looked up as the curtain was pushed aside. "Ah, Kenza, you got my message I see."

"I did indeed." Kenza drew the curtain behind her and dragged a stool over next to his cot. "Of course, I'd have come to see you eventually in any case, but I was getting excellent updates from your healer." Kenza's dry tone indicated that Tiravala hadn't been any more restrained in stating her views to Kenza than she had been in stating them to U'kaiah himself.

"I can imagine. I've been trying to figure out if the two of you aren't related in some way," the bronzerider chuckled. Neither one of them was good at being subtle. "How is the wing doing?"

"Fine," Kenza replied as she settled down onto the stool. "And it will continue to do so while you recover. D'ale knows his work, and he has me to boss him around."

"That's still a lot of pressure for the both of you to bear," the wingleader said thoughtfully. "I would like it if you could get Knara to help you with some of the load, Kenza. She's young, but she has a very good mind. I think she has real potential."

Kenza practiced her usual subtlty by ignoring him completely. "I hear your son came in to see you. How's the little lad doing?"

"Well. Full of energy and good health. He's going to be a charmer, mark my words." U'kaiah smiled as he remembered how Kaiafel even had Jaela wrapped around his little finger.

"Like his father, hmm?" Kenza laughed, shaking her head. "You've been charming the ladies for too many turns." "Of course. I seem to remember one particular greenrider who always wore her black hair in braids that I had charmed pretty successfully, despite her gruff exterior." He gave her his most charming smile again, the one he used to pull out for those moments when he was caught being naughty and knew he could smile his way out of it.

"Mmmm... and I remember a little brat who drove me to distraction with his big eyes and his wistful smile..." Kenza reached out to pat him on the shoulder. "You are too handsome for your own good, lad. It's lucky for you that some of us are able to keep our wits around you." "Witty woman have proved more hazardous to my wellbeing then Thread and timing combined." He snuggled down further into the pillows.

"I'm glad you appreciate them," she replied with a mischevious smile. "Not all men know what to do with a strong woman... like the Weyrwoman, for example. I've always liked her. She's witty." "Yes, she certainly is that." **And _definitely_ potentially hazardous...**

Kenza wrinkled her nose at him when he gave her nothing else. "Oh fine, be that way. I was hoping for a tale of intrigue and romance... I've got to live vicariously through you young things sometimes."

"And just what do you know about Jaela and I," U'kaiah asked curiously. He had not breathed a word of their failed flings to a soul. "Know?" Kenza snorted. "Nothing. But I talk to both of you fairly often and I'm reasonably smart... I just will have to continue to suspect until I can trip one of you up and make you confess your deepest secrets to me." "Secrets? There's no secrets. Nothing is happening between the two of us.
She can barely stand me most the time." She talks about him? Probably not in a good way...

"Oh, I have a hard time believing that..." Kenza reached over to ruffle U'kaiah's hair in a manner guaranteed to annoy him. "You may be a pain in any sensible woman's behind, but most of us like you more than we want to admit."

"Well, there was a time when... well, it doesn't really matter." He shrugged. "We would not be a good match it seems. And I have plenty of other distractions that are far less trouble."

"Well, just keep the distractions to a minimum until you're feeling better."
Standing, Kenza leaned over and gave him an uncharacteristicly fond kiss on the forehead. "D'ale and I will take care of your wing, but I want you back to lead us in one piece, young man. Don't cross Tiravala. She'll tattle to her father and U'val will bring all sorts of trouble down on you." He had to smile slightly. It was rare that anyone could induce any spark of affection in his wingthird, and it warmed his heart and did wonders for his ego to know he was still one of them. "I'll hurry, I promise."

"Promise to take your time, instead." She flashed him a mischevious smile.
"I won't let D'ale break your wing. And I don't want U'val chasing _me_
down. I may have swatted your behind when you were a child, but _he_ swatted mine!" "Ah, what a lovely thought you leave me with," U'kaiah said with an impish smile as he sank back into the pillows and closed his eyes. "Yes, Kenza, it does my body good."
