Cinale

Cinale

"You were so sweet to gather these for me, love," Cinale said, glancing up from her weeding to smile at him. "I'm surprised these clippings could be salvaged..."

"Not all was lost, my sweet," the Hallsecond smiled as he reached down to touch her cheek softly. He couldn't think about their old Hall's herb garden without remembering a cold night months before when he had finally worked up the courage to kiss her. Since then he had kissed those lips several times, and with a bit more finesse than that first time, a bit more daring. But the fact that it was the first made that moment one of the happiest in his life. He was glad he could bring a piece of that special place to help start their new herb garden, their new lives together.

Forgetting about the weeds for just a moment, the cook leaned forward to kiss him gently on the lips. "My kitchen just wouldn't be the same without an herb garden..." The tender look she gave him was knowing as she reached down to dig her hands in the soft dirt again.

He looked around carefully to be sure no one had noticed. After all, the new Hall was starting to get busier with everyone trying to get it ready for everyone to move in and be settled before Turn's End.
Clearing his throat he said, "Well, I suppose I better start, eh?"

"You're so good to me. Here," she handed him a pair of gardening gloves--a _man's_ gardening gloves, of course. "These'll help. Now, you're going to want to tear these ugly weeds up and just throw them in my pile. Then together we can rake the soil down and churn it around a bit."

"All right." Pulling weeds was something the vintner's hands were accustomed to. He held up the gloves. "But... I don't think I need these really. They just make my fat fingers all that much harder to work with."

"But...then you'll get dirt up your nails." She wrinkled her nose at the thought.

"Well, I'll clean them out," he shrugged as he reached for a weed.

**Men...** She shook her head with an amused smile and pulled out yet another weed. What an ugly thing _this_ one was... It would strangle her precious, delicate herbs if it somehow found a way to grow in here again. "I brought a couple sandwiches for later."

"Who made them?" he asked curiously as he pulled out another one of the nasty weeds.

"Me," she grinned. "I had some time earlier."

"But I thought you liked the Amber Hill's cook's sandwiches," he said with just a hint of disappointment.

"I do. I got the recipe from her, remember?"

"She sure is a good cook," he smiled as he pulled another weed. Daigoro cringed slightly and looked up at Cinale to be sure he didn't offend her by saying that. "Of course, not as good as you are. Good differently."

"Don't you worry, hon. I have no ruffled feathers to smooth down," she grinned. "But if you had said to me that you preferred her cookies to _mine_....."

"Most definitely not," Daigoro assured her. "No one makes cookies half so good as you do, my love."

"Well I should hope not!"

"Or bread for that matter," he grinned. "Or herdbeast."

"You enjoy my roasts then?" Cinale asked with a grin, glancing up to meet his eyes.

"You know I do," he chuckled. "You made it for me often enough."

"Mmmm...yes. But I know you don't like fish. That's too bad--we live next to a whole river just teeming with them!"

"Yes," Daigoro said with a forced smile. "That is too bad. But of course, you could always cook fish for the Hall." He just hoped there was a spot of stew somewhere for him on those days...

"Of course, hon. I'd never pass up an opportunity such as this!"
Ah....the dozens of recipes she had yet to try out with fish as the main course....and she could spend Turns perfecting them! Her smile grew at the thought. "How come you don't like fish? I don't think I've ever really asked you why..."

"How come _anyone_ doesn't like a particular food," he shrugged. "It just... never tasted good to me."

"And here I thought you were going to tell me you'd had a bad experience with eating fish," she teased, sitting back on her heels.

"Well, having to eat something you can barely stomach isn't exactly a _pleasant_ experience," the Hallsecond chuckled. "By the way, I have some news you might like to hear."

"Really? What?"

"I talked to Fielton," he said, trying to hide his excited smile.
Daigoro couldn't wait to see her face when he told her! He had wanted to save the news until later, but he just couldn't keep it to himself anymore. "About our living arrangements."

Cinale sat up straighter, gazing at him in breathless anticipation.
"What did he say, Daigoro?"

He grinned and leaned over and kissed her softly. "He said we can have a cot."

"Oh, _hon_!" She threw her arms around his neck, kissing him back.
"That's wonderful! How did you convince him?"

"I told him it would make his cook wondrously happy," he said slipping in another small kiss before reaching back to take her hands in his.
They were, after all, in public, and as yet unmarried. The Hallsecond didn't want people to wonder what they did when they were alone. "And so we'll have that cot with a porch and a small space for a garden if you like. Something suitable a Master craftsman and his growing family."

She squeezed his hands gently. "Suitable indeed! A porch....
And...Faranth....a flower garden." Her tone turned wistful. "I'd love one of those."

"Maybe around the porch? Those are always beautiful," he said with an almost wistful smile. "And then we just have to have a couple children to fill the empty rooms."

"And then our dream cot will be complete, won't it?"

"Yes, love. Then, we'll have everything. Even the occasional weed,"
he said, wrinkling up his nose as he pointed to the rows and rows still left to do.

Grinning, she turned back to the mounds of dirt before them. "I suppose we should get back to work, shouldn't we?"

"We do need to get the herbs in the ground," Daigoro nodded. "But nothing says we can't daydream while we pull."

**What a romantic he is...** she thought with a loving smile as she buried her hands beneath the soil.
