"Carlan?" Ishek called, poking his head into the office and looking around for the man. "Are you free? Because I can come back if you're not." He knew people tended to drop their work for him just because he was the Lord, but Ishek hated that. If they were busy, they were busy, and he could wait.
"Please, come in Milord." The Harper rose to his feet, ever polite. "How can I help you?"
"Marriage ceremonies and contracts." Ishek waved his hands aimlessly in the air and flopped down. "Miralani's marrying Daynar and I'm confused as to what to do now."
"I see," replied the harper as he retook his seat. "First thing is, has a date been agreed for the ceremony?"
"I don't think so. Probably within the next few months." Ishek hazarded.
"So there is plenty of time for this. A contract agreeable to both parties will need to be drafted, then signed. Then the ceremony can take place. I assume that you would want to send to the Harper Hall for a Master to do the honours?"
"Why would I need to?" Ishek blinked. Then he paused. "Oh, it's because he's a Hallmaster, isn't it? I mean, I personally think you'd do a fine job but I guess it's protocol, isn't it."
"It would be your choice, and that of the Lady Miralani of course."
"I'll ask her." Ishek shrugged helplessly. "I don't understand a lot of the politics of the system, and she gets mad at me. So a contract is drafted. That includes the Smith Hall's concessions to us, right?"
"It would indeed, and anything that you care to grant them from the Hold itself."
Ishek nodded. "What happens after everyone says that the contract is okay?"
"Then the ceremony itself can take place. And I'm sure you know how that goes." Carlan cast his mind back to his own day in the spot light. "It can be small and intimate, or a formal an occasion as the Lady and her chosen desire."
Ishek nodded. "It's one of the most wonderful ceremonies." he remarked.
"I have a feeling the Lady will want it formal. What do you think will be planned for after?"
"I'd have to consult with them of course, to see what they would like. But I would Imagine that a meal, and dancing might be appropriate."
Ishek nodded. "You don't think there'll have to be any speeches, will you?" he asked nervously.
"There may be, but as I said, it depends on what the couple choose to do to celebrate their day."
"I see. I suppose I should come back when there's definite plans."
"Perhaps we should arrange a meeting to formalize those, I'd be happy to help in any way I can."
"Thank you, Carlan." Ishek said sincerely. "Honestly, I'd forgotten the work these entail. It's been a long while."
"My own wedding was a simple affair," coinfessed the harper. "I'm sure if my wife had had her way.."
"It would have been much more complex?" Ishek laughed slightly. "Mine was fairly simple. Of course, we were both just normal children- I suppose now I'd be expected to have a large one. Sometimes I think life is easier without rank."
"Tell that to my wife," joked Carlan.
"Some people are born into it and don't want it, some people don't have it and want it... it'd be nice if life had everyone born into rank who wanted it and no one who didn't. But life's not easy." Ishek laughed slightly. "Or maybe rank is just silly."
Carlan had to laugh, genuinely. If only Lord Nikeves had thought that way when they were at Sapphire Meadows Hold they'd not have had to leave as they did.
"So tell me," Ishek asked, "is there any new music in? Turn's End is coming soon, I'd like there to be some music, even if no one quite knows what's going on yet. But there is going to be some kind of celebration."
"I'd have to send to the Harper Hall to find out, but I'm sure I can get something new."
"That would be appreciated. I'd love to see a good celebration. I just don't know what to plan. There should be music, and a feast if we can, and dancing. Since you must know more about this than I, can you think of anything else that would be appropriate for the Turn's End?"
"Speeches again, saying how well the last turn has gone, and your hopes for the new turn."
Ishek nodded. "I can do that." he said, trying to convince himself of it. "I really appreciate your advice, Carlan."
"It's what I am here for Milord."
