Description: Fielton gives Daigoro some possibly less-than-helpful advice as he gets ready for his wedding.
Location: Vintner Hall
Date: month 13, day 30 of Turn 3
Daigoro readjusted his tunic yet again in the mirror. Shards, was his hair sticking up in back? He licked his fingers and tried to smooth it down, but it kept sticking up! Well, there was nothing to be down now.
Unless someone had something he could cut those hairs down with so they wouldn't stand out like that... He turned and looked at his profile in the mirror. Was he starting to get his gut back?! He tried sucking his gut in a bit, but that was about as successful as trying to smooth his hair down. It was just all Cinale's cookies.
The Hallsecond let out a resigned sigh as he turned back towards the mirror. Well, it was now or never. "I'm getting married today..." he whispered to his reflection, trying to shake the surreal feeling of it all. Daigoro held no doubts that Cinale was indeed the woman he wanted to spend the rest of his life with. He had just been waiting so long, and watching after friend after friend was married. Even some of their children were already married and they were grandfathers now. And here he was, finally taking that inevitable step...
His bronze, Wort, gave a little chirp from his post on top the mirror as the door opened and the Hallmaster walked in. "Fielton, I am not all together sure I will not make a total fool of myself today."
"You probably will," Fielton replied easily, smiling at Daigoro in the mirror. "It's a man's job to be a little bit of a fool on his wedding day."
"What's the woman's job then?" the Hallsecond as skeptically.
"Looking beautiful enough to make even bigger fools out of us."
Fielton's face still looked cheerful enough, but there was something in his eyes that spoke of the same weary pain they'd all been fighting against. "You look fine, Daigoro. Stop messing with your hair."
"How much time do I have?" Daigoro asked, searching frantically for the candle.
"Enough to sit down and take a deep breath," Fielton replied, watching his Hallsecond with a faint smile. "Come on, Daigoro... don't tire yourself out with nerves before the ceremony."
"Right... Save my energy..." The Hallsecond found a chair and carefully sank into it. "Is Cinale ready yet?"
"Of course not." Fielton took the seat next to him. "Women always take their time with this sort of thing. I'm sure Miryene is taking care of everything, though."
"Yeah," Daigoro nodded. He wiped his sweaty palms on his pant legs.
"And the Harper remembers we're to be married today? I know he's pretty busy. Maybe we should remind him."
"He's already here," Fielton replied easily. "Shards, Daigoro. I wasn't even this nervous. Pull yourself together, man."
"I'm not all that worried about the wedding, Fielton." It was what would happen _after_ the wedding...
Fielton figured that out easily enough. "Are you still worried about that? You'll be fine."
"Yeah. Oh yeah, it will be fine," Daigoro nodded, trying as much to convince himself as the Hallmaster.
Fielton sighed and decided that his sense of propriety might have to be sacrificed to keep his Hallsecond from hyperventilating. "Fine. I'll tell you what you need to know. And then we'll never discuss it again."
"Right," the groom replied, trying to make it sound like he was accepting the advice as a friendly gesture rather than really needing it. But the Hallmaster had his full attention.
"Go so slow you think you can't stand it," Fielton advised finally. "And when you've done that, go a little slower. Because things will work out for you either way, but fast won't be good for her." He sort of wished someone had sat him down and given him _that_ advice before he'd married Jayzine. Things might have turned out a lot differently if she hadn't come away from their wedding night hating the idea of bedding him.
"Go slow. Right," Daigoro nodded. "Fast is not good."
Fielton wondered if Daigoro was going to remember a thing he said. His Hallsecond seemed on the verge of total collapse. "And just... be gentle. That's what matters."
Daigoro looked at Fielton in shock. "Of course, Fielton! I will be gentle! I would _never_ hurt Cinale. I am a _gentle_ man!"
"Of course you are," Fielton replied quickly. "But it can be hard to think clearly when you're... nervous." Among other things. "Just don't forget that these things aren't as easy for women as they are for men at first."
"Right." Oh, that made him feel _much_ more confident! So even if he thought things were going well, she might... Faranth, he was going to be lucky if he made it through the night without getting sick.
A drudge saved them both by sticking her head in the door. "Excuse me, sirs, but they are ready for you now."
Fielton set a hand on Daigoro's shoulder. "You'll be fine, Daigoro. Are you ready?"
The Hallsecond took a deep breath and placed his huge hands on his knees. "Yup," he nodded firmly as he pushed himself up, perhaps a little too fast. Or maybe he was feeling a little lightheaded already. He put on arm on Fielton's shoulder as much to steady himself as to thank the Hallmaster for his advice. "Well, lets do it then."
