Description: Belamick and Tey talk about impressing.

Date: month 1, day 11 of Turn 4

"Hey there," Belamick greeted the familiar face as he approached Tey at the table. "Is this seat taken? I bring plenty of fruit and cheeses to share."

"No, it's not taken, and the cheese would be welcome. How is Candidacy, Belamick?"

He sat down and offered his plate to the fellow candidate and kept a mental note of which she favored, "Still interesting. The big day is any time now, are you excited?"

Tey made a face but couldn't help but smile, too. She had been excited the first few times and supposed he was. "Not really."

"Oh," he said a bit confused, then realized he probably hit a nerve since she'd stood before. "Sorry, it's probably more stressful than exciting by now isn't it."

Tey considered that as she sliced into one of the cheeses with her knife. "Hmm." She tasted the cheese. "A bit of a 'nothing' now. Just a time of uncertainty between the clutch appearing and the eggs hatching.

Waiting to know if things will change or if ... they won't." She shrugged. "I don't mind Standing. My father thinks it's our duty to do so."

"Do you not _want_ to be a dragonrider?" She would be the second person he'd met who hadn't, and the notion still confused him somewhat.

"I don't mind, either way. My brother wanted to be one, and he never Impressed." She smiled and shrugged again. "It's got nothing to do with what _I_ want. It will happen, or it won't. All the wanting on Pern won't change that."

It still confused him, but maybe if he had stood for turns and never Impressed, he'd develop the same lackadaisical viewpoint... but he doubted it. He wasn't the type of person to just sit around and wait for something. If he wanted something he went after it and worked until he got it. If he didn't Impress this time, he'd study his healer texts, take his candidate classes, and when a new clutch hardened he'd be there again ready to be the best dragonrider he could be. "Well I _want_ it. And maybe wanting helps, you never know. You shouldn't just give up."

"It's not giving up," Tey said. "It's just how things are."

"Well I'll be cheering for you, Tey." Belamick exclaimed, determined not to let her apathy infect him. "I have enough want for both of us."

"Perhaps because it's all so new to you," Tey suggested. She waved a hand to indicated everything around them. "The Weyr, dragons, being Searched. It's not to me, and I wasn't."

Belamick was confused again, "Wait... you weren't Searched? How can you Stand if you haven't been Searched by the dragons?"

Tey laughed at his surprise. "Weyrfolk don't need to be. We can just ask the Weyrwoman's permission and ... Stand. That's what I did."

He thought a moment and asked, "Did you ever _ask_ one of the Search dragons if they thought you should Stand?" If they hadn't liked her, it would explain why she still hadn't Impressed after all these turns.

Tey's smile became a grin. "Well, my brother did. They liked him right enough, but still ..." She shrugged. "I didn't, but I don't know if the others did."

"Well our harper told us dragonriding was in the bloodlines. That's how I knew I had the chance of being Searched, my father told me that there are dragonriders on my mother's side." Belamick explained proudly, "So if your brother is and father are dragonrider material, then you probably are too."

"And two sisters Impressed," Tey agreed. "So I guess that's why we -
weyrbred candidates - don't bother with Searching."

Belamick shrugged, but he was impressed by her lineage. "I guess that makes sense. I'd still be curious."

"Perhaps that's more personality than upbringing."

He couldn't help but smile, "Perhaps."
