They'd had a nap, the pair of them, and Saradath had assured him that she didn't need to eat before they went on duty for the evening, even if he did. And he had, eating only because he needed to to replace the energy lost flying against Thread in the morning, and to carry him through the evening on Watch duty. He gathered up his plate and cutlery and headed for the clearing hatch with less than his usual feeling of contentment.
"Jh'slaen," came a voice from behind him.
"Er - oh." At least it wasn't somebody else with something to say about his opinions. "Nytha. Hello."
"You okay?" she asked. He looked a little, well harried.
"Fine. Saradath got a little ash burn, but otherwise we're hide-whole."
"That's good," she said. "Listen, can I have a word with you?"
"Why not? Everybody else has had a turn," he said, trying to make his comment light and rustling up a smile from somewhere.
"It might be my fault," she said.
He stepped away from the busy hatch and managed a real smile. "No, I'm pretty sure it was mine."
"It's just I mentioned it to Avellan, and she could talk for Pern..."
"Oh, that. Yes." He shrugged. "It's not your fault. I mean, it was my idea and I didn't say for you to keep it to yourself. I wouldn't have. It's an opinion, not a secret."
"So you aren't mad at me then?" she asked.
"No. Not really. Only when it rains," he added with a laugh. "You know, and I'm on Watch Duty? Then I'm mad with everybody I've ever known."
"I am sorry you know. If I'd have thought it'd get this far, well I'd not have mentioned it to Avellan at all."
"If I thought it would get this far I might have sworn a vow of silence," Jh'slaen suggested. "But I didn't, and you were free to tell who you liked."
"So we can stay friends over this?"
He wasn't certain they had really been friends beforehand, but they hadn't become enemies which was probably the reassurance she wanted.
"Of course we can. Don't worry about it, Nytha. No hard feelings on my part and Saradath thinks being the Watch dragon is an honour, so she's having a great time."
"I'm glad."
"Settled then? I have to go and get ready. The _last_ thing I need is to be late and have _that_ reported to the wingleader."
"No, you don't need that at all."
Jh'slaen leaned forward and kissed the young woman on the cheek. "See, all fixed. Thanks for caring, though." He raised a hand in farewell and headed quickly out of the dining cavern reflecting that even if he'd made a few enemies from his outspokenness, he also seemed to have made a few friends.
