Dikero settled into the chair that Daigoro indicated, waiving away the offer of refreshments. "I'm afraid this isn't going to be a very comforting conversation. I wish I had better news for you, but I told your Hallmaster two days ago when I first came to visit that this wasn't likely to go well."
"All right," Daigoro said as he sat back in his chair. "Give it to me straight then."
"There's nothing I can do that will make Jhonnel better." Dikero shrugged one shoulder and shook his head. "There's no cure for this...
no herb or salve. You could watch him every moment and keep him from having access to anything that could intoxicate him, but I think that you and I both know this is the last place on Pern someone would want to attempt such a venture."
Daigoro nodded thoughtfully. "What about a mindhealer? Could a mindhealer help?"
"Maybe. Over time... if there is something that is making him so miserable that he feels the only way to deal with it is to drink."
Dikero hesitated. "I don't like to imply anything, because I know Miryene is a lovely woman... but it seems to me that his problem increased markedly after his marriage, from what I've been told."
The hallsecond shook his head violently. "No, Dikero, I cannot believe it. I cannot believe that Mirynene could have caused him to become such a beast."
"No..." Dikero held up a hand to ward off the Hallsecond's words. "Of course not. Like I said, Miryene is a lovely woman, and I doubt she caused anything. But for whatever reason, it seems clear enough to me that Jhonnel did not find happiness in their relationship... so sending him to a mindhealer while leaving him in the relationship might be pointless." Daigoro didn't like the idea of Miryene staying with that man anyway. But she wanted to work things out... "Well then, what do you recommend we do?"
Dikero hesitated again, and then sighed. "This is a hard situation for me, Master Daigoro. I am Miryene's healer, and in that capacity, I would tell you to send him to the farthest corner of Pern and leave him there.
A man who hits a woman drunk will quite possibly hit her sober, if he's angry enough. It's a chance I don't feel particuarly comfortable in taking, to be perfectly honest. It might not be the best thing you can do for Jhonnel, but perhaps if he were sent somewhere less conducive to constant temptation..." Though what exactly a Vintner who couldn't be around alcohol would do was beyond him. The same question ran through Daigoro's mind. "Perhaps I should recomment to Master Fielton that Jhonnel be stripped of his knots then."
"That's up to him," Dikero replied a little uncomfortably. "I don't know what his ability to do his job is. However, my opinion is that he is still a danger to his wife and children, and will be until something happens that makes him stop. There very well may be Healers at the Healer Hall who would take an interest trying to cure him... perhaps that is something you could consider."
"I will bring it up to Master Fielton. And who knows, perhaps our Main Vintner Hall would have some advice on the subject. I'm sure Jhonnel is not the first in the craft to have fallen victim to it," Daigoro said with a sad shake of his head. "But I suppose there are hazards to every craft."
"That there are. As for Miryene... she needs to be under bedrest for _real_ this time." Dikero's eyes narrowed and he leaned forward slightly. "She and I had a slight disagreement on what, exactly, bedrest entails. She is now aware that it does not include walking outside, sitting outside, making tea, making meals or cleaning. It includes laying in her bed or sitting in a chair."
Daigoro frowned. "She will follow your instructions more carefully this time. I will see to that personally."
"Good. I'll continue to visit her here, and hopefully there won't be any complications." The Hallsecond rose to his feet. "Thank you, journeyman. As always, you have been a great help."
