"Do you have a moment?" asked the Hallsecond as she koncked on the Hallmaster's door. Having seen the way Master Eilomar had spoken to that young apprentice earlier, she really weanted to make sure it didn't happen again. Whether the girl deserved it or not, nobody should be spoken to like that.
"For you? Always." He set his hidework aside and pointed to the seat in front of him. "I have a pitcher of klah if you want some."
"Now that would be good," she said with feeling. "And you might need some too when you hear what I have to say."
"Are you suggesting I break out the bottle hidden in my bottom drawer?"
he asked, eyebrow raised. Thanja was hardly the type to be easily ruffled... Whatever it was had to be bad.
"Wait until you hear it first," she said as she sat down. "I came across Eilomar earlier today."
"Oh, if this story is about Master Eilomar..." Almonteo reached for the handle on his bottom drawer. "Lets use the klah mugs, just to preserve appearances."
"That's exactly what this is about, appearances," commented Thanja as she moved the mugs forward.
"This sounds ominous," the Hallmaster sighed as he poured them each a small dose.
"I caught him bawling out one of the young ladies," she said as she took her mug. "In public. And he was rather... derogatory about female crafters."
Why did that not surprise him... "What exactly did he say?"
"I only heard the last bit, which was where he suggested she get herself back to the kitchens. I don't know what he'd said to her before that, but she was in tears." She took a sip of the drink before continuing.
"I don't know if she deserved that dressing down or not, but it was not something that should have been done in public."
"Certainly not. And, well, were it anyone else, I would say they should know better. I'm not so sure he does." Either that or he was knowingly and willfully causing trouble. Almonteo didn't really want to think that about the man.
"I did pull him aside and remind him where he was and why he shouldn't say that kind of thing, bur his reply was that if she couldn't toughen up and accept that kind of talk she wasn't fit to be a Harper."
"Yes... I had better talk have a serious talk with him." There would be no toughening up of apprentices, especially not by someone who could not also practice compassion and gentleness.
"It might be an idea, becasue I really don't think he'd listen to me at all."
"Does he listen to _anyone_? There is nothing, literally nothing, that man likes listening to but the sound of his own voice." And if he were not such an effective choir Master... Oh well. It was an adjustment period. That was all. Eilomar just was taking much longer to adjust than the rest...
"I think you might stand more of a chance of getting through to him though. He seems to have no respect for any woman." "A way of thinking that had better change unless he wants to be assigned to a Hold," Almonteo sighed. He would not have a Master harassing his new apprentices! They were needed! "Thank you for letting me know. I will have a talk with him."
"Good, and I'll speak to the girl. Make sure she's okay."
