"Good morning sir." Karri said cheerfully as she entered the Weyrlingmaster's office. "Good morning, Karri," T'mahl nodded and pointed to her hand. "How are you healing?"
"Very well, thank you." she replied. While her shoulder and leg were still very bruised, she no longer walked with a limp. He gave her a quick nod of approval. There were still Candidates to train. "Very good. You're ready to get to work then?"
She nodded emphatically, "Definitely. I think I was going stir crazy in my weyr, and I'm sure Elliath will enjoy the peace and quiet of having me busy."
T'mahl smiled slightly at that. "I'm sure she will miss not having you at her beck and call."
"Or everyone else for that matter!" With her being off her feet for the last sevenday Elliath had had several volunteers to attend to her. "So... do you have any use for a one armed assistant?" "But of course," T'mahl nodded. "I wish I had real weyrlings to offer you, but since you all graduated, we will just have to wait until the next gold rises. Until then, I have plenty of antsy Candidates we need to keep occupied."
Karri couldn't help but chuckle. "This will sure be interesting... to be on the flip side of things." "How comfortable do you feel speaking in front of large groups?"
Her eyes got a little wider, but she bit down her fear, "I can do it, sir." Although the more she thought about the more she didn't like it... everyone would be looking at her scar, and they wouldn't be dragonriders, they'd think her ugly.
T'mahl wasn't convinced. "You look a little uncertain."
"I just... I just haven't done it before. But I'm sure I'll get the hang of it." she explained, keeping a brave face. "Well, we can start you out in small groups, then. I've decided to assign mentors for new Candidates. Someone who can help them through their first few days in the Weyr. Do you think you would be able to handle that?"
Karri smiled, this sounded like more her thing, a few people sounded alot less intimidating. "I think I'd like that, it sounds like something I'd be good at." "All right then," T'mahl nodded, making a note of that. "And when you are feeling more comfortable, we can start you into talking to smaller classes first." He wanted to build her confidence, but he had found some people didn't do well being thrown in before they were ready.
"Okay." the greenrider nodded, "I think as long as you don't have me tossing firestone sacks, I'll be fine with anything." "I don't think there will be any danger of that until well after you're healed." Not unless a gold rose that evening.
"Good," Karri said and grinned. "Are there any candidates I can go and meet now?"
Well, she was eager. That was a good sign. "Soon. I have yet to assign mentors to the candidates. It will be done within the next day or two."
"Sounds good. I told A'lin that I'd help him this morning unless you had something for me to do right away, so just holler if you think of anything I guess." She said. Hollering wasn't quite T'mahl's style, but he understood the sentiment.
"Thank you. That is all."
