Description: There's a delayed class of Weyrlings to graduate, and the Wingleaders meet to fight over them!
Location: River Bluff Weyr
Date: month 2, day 27 of Turn 4
"Well, it's long overdue due to unforeseen circumstances, but we have a class of Weyrlings who are ready to graduate to the Wings," Tsaera said by way of opening the Wingleader's meeting. Everyone had arrived, the door was closed, and sweating glasses of icy water sat before each bronzerider - and herself, of course. "M'galec, thank you for agreeing to fill in for J'an."
U'das felt the now all to familiar sadness. You would have thought by now he was used to losing friends, but you never got used to it. He forced himself to shake off the feeling and concentrate on business.
J'an had been a good friend, but life went on.
"Of course, ma'am," the bronzerider nodded. He had hoped they would have found a replacement for the Weyrlingmaster by now. His skills were needed in the infirmary during Falls, not in chasing around weyrlings. "Is there any word as to when we can expect a new Weyrlingmaster?"
"Not as yet," said K'sedel. Word had been sent out among the Weyrs, it was only a matter of time before a likely candidate made himself known and available.
"Don't worry; we'll have someone in place in no time, I'm sure,"
Tsaera said. There was one bronzerider in particular she had her eye on... and M'galec was a better surgeon than he was a teacher, and for the Weyrling's sakes - and for F'lin's - she'd rather he spent his time in the Infirmary. She looked down at the hide before her. "In the mean time, though, we have weyrlings that need to go out into the Wings. Kustaava, I'zar and Oniya will go to Lagoon Wing as staff, naturally. I could use a few bodies for a month or two if there are weyrlings who shouldn't be graduated to a full fighting Wing straight off."
"What about the Weyrling Assistants? Are any of them of age to join the Wings yet?" asked K'sedel of M'galec.
"A few," M'galec nodded. "Bluerider An'dr, Greenriders K'sai and Nocte, and a bronzerider, Y'nour. K'tar and E'lish are now of age, but I would say they are not yet ready to join a fighting wing. They both have a distinct lack of maturity that might make them a danger to themselves and others come Threadfall."
"I could use the bluerider or one of the greenriders and the bronze rider. Especially if he is leader-material," U'das said.
"He has been in the Weyrling Wing for longer than I have been here.
He has experience." Not to mention the obvious fact that he was a _bronzerider_ and therefore already it could be assumed he had leadership potential, but M'galec was tactful enough not to point that out.
U'das had been bronzerider and leader so long that he knew that impressing bronze didn't make you automatically good leader. There were good leaders and then there were those who should be good leaders but weren't.
"All right. An'dr and Nocte will be assigned to Torrent Wing.
K'sedel, why don't you take Y'nour for now, and if he shows potential he can be transferred over to Torrent Wing as well," Tsaera said, and picked up her pen to make a note of it.
"That makes sense to me with the bronzerider, but I could use another greenrider though. Ranai came to me before this meeting and asked for a transfer to your wing," said the Weyrleader with a nod to Tsaera.
"She's pregnant following her green's last flight."
"What - another?" Tsaera suppressed a frown. Greenriders and pregnancy were like a plague, sometimes. "All right. I'll take her, so why don't you take... Qariona, I'linnet and L'sai?"
"Unless you need any of them U'das?" asked K'sedel.
"No, you can have them," U'das grinned.
"We still have a few more greenriders to assign," Tsaera said.
"Oricahna and T'ist could go to your Wing, K'sedel, to balance things out. If you'll take them."
"I'll take them."
"All right." Tsaera made another note on her hide, then looked over at the list of weyrlings that M'galec had provided. "There's also G'mal, T'kala, C'vem and R'chaw on blues. Maybe G'mal and R'chaw could go to Torrent, and C'vem and T'kala to Rapids Wing. I've heard that G'mal has a bit of a mouth on him, sometimes."
U'das groaned when he heard that. Didn't he had enough with J'lai?
"Oh, quit your bellyaching!" Tsaera said with a grin. "It'll be good for you." She turned back to her notes. "There's two brownriders, and U'das' Wing is looking a little thin there. I'd suggest that they both join Torrent Wing."
U'das nodded and jotted down their names. "Seems like I'm going to have my hands full."
"But you're the Wingleader, you'll manage," reminded K'sedel gently.
"Can I ask for raise?" U'das asked, laughing.
K'sedel couldn't help laughing too.
Tsaera's lips twitched, but she suppressed the urge to join in.
"You're idiots, the pair of you," she said lightly, then turned back to her notes. "But, while I have you all here - if not sensible -
there's a few things I'd like to discuss about the Graduation Ceremony itself..."
They were locked in the Weyrleader's office for another candlemark, hashing out details and arguing over the placement of a couple of the weyrlings. When they finally left, Tsaera had a smile on her face. It had been some time in coming, but things were finally moving forward in the wake of J'an's death. Weyrlings would graduate and take to the skies to take his place - and that was the way the world should be.
