Description: Thanja and her husband Kanydrin watch as the flit egg she was given hatches
Location: Harper Hall
Date: month 3, day 5 of Turn 4
The evenings were the best times, thought Thanja as she settled down on the couch next to her husband. All quiet, no apprentices to check on, no more hides to look at. The remains of the dinner they had just shared lay on the table next to them, both of them feeling too lazy to clear it away now.
"I heard from An'dr," she said. "He's going to the wings soon."
The man shifted to make more room for her, dinner pleasantly heavy in his stomach, making him feel drowsy. "Mm-hmm."
"He sent a letter with a messenger who'd come from River Bluff, he'd have come himself, but he was busy." A smile crossed her face as she thought of her middle son, so completely different to the other two boys.
"I imagine he is busy," noted Kanydrin. "And in the wings? I suppose that Pluserth is as excited as An'dr over that?" It always struck the man as a little strange, but with two children Impressing, their family had grown by two dragons.
"He said Nytha couldn't say which of them was the most excited. At least she's there with him." As she spoke those words, the little pot in which the precious gift of a firelizard egg lay began to rock slightly.
Kanydrin squinted at the pot. "Did that move?"
"I think it might," she said staring at it as it moved again. She got up, and gently dared to place a hand on it. Peering inside, she saw a faint tracing of cracks along the surface.
"Kanydrin, I think it's time for it to hatch!"
This news awakened him from his post-meal languor. "Really?" He rose from his seat and moved to the table, quickly picking choice bits from the leftovers on the table. "Are you ready for it?"
"I hope so," she reached out for the scraps. "I don't think it'll be long now."
And it wasn't, before the egg cracked completely, a small, damp, vivid blue body making his way out into the light of the room.
"Oh look at you, just like Pluserth."
The flit creeled hungrily, maw open as he sought food. Automatically Thanja held out a scrap for him, which he ate, then demanded more.
"Beautiful, aren't you," she said concentrating on him. "Beautiful and hungry."
Her husband placed the additional scraps he had collected on a plate near her. "Very beautiful." He glanced about, though his eyes kept returning to the tiny creature. "Do you think this will be enough food or should I look for more?"
"I..." She looked at the little one, his belly rounded by food, a sense of contentment and sleepiness radiating from him. "I think he's had enough for now."
Kanydrin nodded and reached out a finger toward the newly-hatched flit, but stopped, reminding himself that this creature was his wife's, bonded to _her_ and not of him. "May I touch him?"
"Yes, but gently."
The little one had curled up, deeming the spot in which he lay suitable to sleep in.
The man reached toward the firelizard, his forefinger barely tracing the top of the animal's head. He spoke in a voice slightly above a whisper.
"I'd heard that they were soft but hadn't quite expected this."
"Me neither, and he needs a name." Thanja looked at him, admiring his tiny form. "He really is a minature Pluserth, isn't he."
"He is, but it would be a bit awkward to call him that."
"I know." She thought for a moment, "How does Plumage sound? In honour of his display as he came out of his egg."
"Plumage." He said the name softly, his finger now tracing the delicate framework and connecting membranes of the flit's wing. "This does has an almost feathery look, with the play of light along that thin hide. The name really does suit."
"Plumage it is then."
