Feeling something sliding against her, Traelyn suddenly started awake. her eyes flew open, and she found herself staring up at an unfamiliar ceiling. Where _was_ she? Again, that something shifted against her, and she swiveled her head around - and moaned. Her sharding _head_! It hurt.
Shards, it hurt. Putting a hand to her brow, she rubbed it - and remembered what had happened the night before. **I'm hung-over,** she thought blearily, irritated. She blinked a couple times, glad that it was dark, for the light surely would have made this sharding hreadache _much_
worse. The sun hadn't even risen over the mountain peaks yet...it really _was_ early! And what was she doing awake at this sharding candlemark?
When her eyes finally adjusted, she realized that it was N'klar sleeping beside her. Again, she rubbed her brow. Shards. Her head... Maybe splashing some cold water on her face would help. Or maybe she should just dunk her whole head in. As carefully as she could so she wouldn't disturb him, Trae slid out from beneath N'klar's arm and haltingly made her way into the bathing chamber.
Stifling a gasp as the ice-cold water hit her warm skin, she shivered, clenching her teeth, her irritation rising. **I shouldn't've sharding _drank_ so much...** Grabbing a towel, she patted the droplets off her cheeks and forehead, trying not to think about how loud her heartbeat sounded in her ears.
She braced her hands against the side-paneling of the bathing room and stood there for a long while, trying to get her bearings. Sighing, Traelyn looked around the dark room - and suddenly wondered where U'kaiah was. He _had_ been there last night - and this was his _weyr_.
And he wasn't here. And neither was Kalamath.
Her jaw tightened and she raked a hand through her hair. **Nyith?**
Silence.
**Nyith? Wake up, dear heart.**
Thr queen roused reluctantly. }:_What_?:{ Nyith's strong irritation surprised Traelyn. True, it was appallingly early, but the dragon didn't have to get that tone with her! **Where's Kalamath and his rider?**
There was a long pause before Nyith responded, just a little less irritated than before, }:They are at Dolphin Cove Weyr.:{ Trae blinked. **Dolphin Cove _Weyr_?**
}:The Dolphin Hall, to be precise.:{
**The Dolphin _Hall_?** What, in the name of Faranth, was _U'kaiah_ doing at the Dolphin Hall? He had no reason to go...
Wait.
Traelyn's breathing hitched, quickening, and she could feel her heart begin to race. The _dolphins_... They were known for their ability to "see" into a person's body. With their sonar, they could see if a person had torn a muscle, sprained an ankle, or had broken a bone. They could detect pregnancy in women.
And they could detect strains in a person's heart.
Fear clutched at her. **Nyith, you need to come to Kalamath's ledge and pick me up. _Now_.**
}:I'm coming!:{
**Oh, you _sharding_ man... You sharding _idiot_... If anything's happened to you...**
~*~
The bright, late-afternoon sunlight practically blinded Traelyn as they came out of /between/ above Dolphin Cove Weyr. Her moan was lost on the wind as she forced her eyes to stay open - and it sharding didn't help the pounding in her temples any!
As Nyith caught an updraft and soared higher, she suddenly let out a stunning, triple-noted bugle - a cry to which the dragons far below her answered without even the slightest hesitation. Trae would have chastised her queen for such outrageous behavior if she hadn't caught sight of Kalamath right below them, on the shoreline. With U'kaiah.
She could feel her fear begin to burn away into anger. And her temper began to rise.
The bronzerider had seen the gold appear overhead and was quite surprised.
**Isn't that Trae and Nyith?**
}: Yes. And Nyith says they are not happy with us. :{
**Figures,** U'kaiah thought with a sigh. He'd better go face Trae and tell them why he was there. She'd probably figured out already...
As soon as Nyith's feet touched the sand, Traelyn had whipped off her helmet and alighted, her dark eyes blazing as she approached him.
The bronzerider met her half way. "Good morning, Trae. I hope I didn't wake you this morning. I figured you'd still be asleep after the night we all had."
"Cut the pleasantries, U'kaiah," she snapped. "When were you planning on telling me about all of _this_?" She swept a hand to the Hall and the ocean.
**Shards,** U'kaiah thought, surprised by her tone. **What could have set her off this morning.** It was not like her to be so short with him. "All of what, Trae?"
She glared at him. Was he playing _games_ with her? "You. Being here,"
she replied through clenched teeth.
"I... I'm sorry, Trae. I didn't mean to worry you." The bronzerider stepped forward and reached out for her. "Please, don't be angry. I just didn't want to scare you is all."
Traelyn shifted away. She didn't want to be touched. She didn't want to be calmed. And she was _far_ from dropping this. "You didn't want to _scare_ me?" Her eyes flashed. "Shards, U'kaiah! I was damned scared when I woke up and you weren't beside me snoring away like N'klar! And after Sarazara told me what you failed to mention before..." Why were there sharding _tears_ suddenly welling up in her eyes?
"Well, you and N'klar looked rather cozy this morning. How was I supposed to know that you would wake up so early looking for me." U'kaiah could feel his own anger rising. She was being so unreasonable! "And I don't know what Sarazara told you, but this is a precaution, and not a confirmation of anything. The Dragonsfall healers found nothing to suggest that my heart was damaged, but they wanted to have it checked by sonar before putting me back into a fighting wing. That's all this was, a _precaution_. What was there to tell?" Of course, there was no reason to tell the goldrider just how scared this "precaution" had made him over the last sevendays. Now, at least, he knew the truth.
"Then why all the secrecy! You know, I wasn't just sharding screwing around when I told you the first time that you took five Turns of my life away with all of this! I was _scared_, U'kaiah. Are you sharding not getting that? And when your _fostermother_ tells me things that _you_
don't even bother to mention to me...it made me even more scared. For _you_."
"And how was I supposed to know what Sarazara told you?" Why was she being so shrding difficult?! "How was I supposed to know that you were scared about something that I didn't know you knew! If I had known that you knew I would have told you! And the reason I didn't tell you in the first place was _because_ I knew you would be worried, and there was no reason for you to. There was nothing you could do about it!"
"But that doesn't mean that you shouldn't've told me!" she yelled back, her fists clenching at her sides. She opened her mouth, ready to slam another one home, when suddenly she was aware instantly of Nyith's mind reaching out for hers. But it wasn't to soothe. Oh no. Not to soothe. The tumultous emotions roiling in her queen right now had _nothing_ to do with soothing her rider.
A strangled cry escaped Trae's lips as she whirled around, her dark eyes stark as she stared, unbelieveing, at Nyith. The queen's hide was glowing with more than just the hue of excellent health, and her eyes were beginning to whirl a brilliant scarlet as she arched her neck coquettishly at Kalamath.
U'kaiah had been surprised when goldrider's tiraid had abruptly ended, but he was even more shocked as his eyes followed hers. "Trae, is Nyith ready to..."
His bronzes response to the queen answered that questions. U'kaiah could feel Kalamath's powerful emotions - desire, elation, and possessiveness. He wanted this dragon as more than just as a mate. Kalamath wanted her as _his_ mate, and it seemed the gold was not that opposed to the idea. U'kaiah didn't know if it was the proximity to the proddy pair or not, but he had never felt such strong emotions coming from his lifemate, and it was starting to effect him as well.
Just as Nyith extended her head to brush the tip of her nose against Kalamath's, she suddenly hissed and sprung skywards. Her challenging scream echoed back down to Kalamath and her rider as she, with incredible
- and dangerous - speed, soared in the direction of the Weyrbowl - to her prey.
"Nyith!" Traelyn screamed after her gold, but her voice was whipped away by the rush of the wind. She whirled, her hands grasping U'kaiah's arms, her dark eyes wide. "You need to get me to her, U'kaiah!"
The bronze's rider tried to ignore the rising need building in himself. All the emotions that Kalamath was feeling for Nyith that moment were naturally transfering themselves to Trae in U'kaiah's mind. She was so sharding close! Practically in his arms already! But he swallowed hard and nodded. "Let's go," he said huskily as he grabbed her hands and lead her towards the impatient bronze.
