Description: Daigoro has to ask the Hallmaster for a new desk...
Location: Vintner Hall
Date: month 3, day 2 of Turn 4
It had been embarrassing enough when he had to ask the journeyman to recopy all their reports one more time because the ink had soaked through them. What he had to ask Fielton for, though, was going to be a bit harder to explain... "I need a new desk."
Fielton glanced up at Daigoro and frowned. "You _have_ a new desk.
Didn't they set it up when they brought mine?"
"Yes, they did. But you see..." Shards, every excuse he and Cinale had concocted just seeped out of his brain! "It... broke."
Having dealt with any number of guilty apprentices and journeymen over the turns, Fielton had no trouble detecting that emotion in his Hallsecond. He set down his pen and leaned back in his chair, not sure if he should be amused or worried. "It broke?"
Daigoro nodded, not wanting to offer more information than he had to.
"Your brand new desk simply fell apart?" He leaned back in his chair and eyed Daigoro. "Perhaps I should talk to the man who put it together, then. I hope we didn't get cheated."
Well, Daigoro certainly didn't want anyone _else_ to get into trouble!
"Oh no! It didn't just _fall_ apart. It was well made, I'm sure."
"Is that so?" This should be interesting. "How _did_ it happen to break, then?"
Daigoro shrugged and inspected the toe of his boot. "I would assume from some kind of weight..."
"Mmmm. You haven't been leaving your office unlocked, have you Daigoro?"
Fielton asked with mock sternness.
"I have. It was really silly of me, really." There were, after all, times when he did leave it unlocked... though usually he was there at the time... A little white lie seemed like the lesser of two infractions at the moment.
"And someone came into your office and placed something heavy on your desk, broke it, and then left no evidence?" The corner of Fielton's mouth twitched up. "I'm not believing a word out of your mouth, Daigoro."
"Did I _say_ someone snuck came into my room and broke my desk?" Shards, there goes that excuse... "I... sat on it. And it couldn't take the weight."
Fielton raised his eyebrows again. "I know Cinale's been favoring you with more cookies than usual, but I don't think it's had _that_ much of an affect."
"I'm... big boned."
"Mmmm." Fielton leaned forward. "Two choices, Daigoro. You can tell me what actually happened, or I'm going to spend the next twenty turns pestering you about it."
"Oh shards," Daigoro groaned, wishing he could just sink into the floor and out of the Hallmaster's sight. "Cinale's flit rose, mine flew her, and we... gave in to temptation." The brewer quickly added, "But please don't blame Cinale in any way. It was my idea."
Fielton raised both eyebrows. "Well. I'm rather tempted to make you work on a broken desk for a month or two, in that case." "I'm sorry Fielton," Daigoro said, looking down at the legs of the Hallmaster's perfectly good desk. "It was unexpected. But she was there, and I was there, and then it started and it was the first time since we've been married and we just... Well, you know how it is."
"No, not really," Fielton replied dryly. Which was the truth. The one time Badia had visited him in his office, he hadn't needed such a foolish excuse. "Fine, Daigoro. We'll get you a new desk. But you had better keep Cinale out of your office in the future. There is enough scandal in the Hall right now. We really don't need behavior like this from the Hallsecond."
"Out completely? Not even to bring me my lunch?" Oh, Cinale was _not_
going to like that...
Fielton sighed. "Fine, she can bring you your lunch... if she can do it without causing any more incidents."
"It was _my_ idea. And I promise, it won't happen again." Not after what happened this time! Shards, if he was this mad over the desk, what kind of punishment would Fielton come up with if he had told him about the ink stain!
"It had best not," he replied, his face still stern. "Is there anything else I need to know about, Daigoro? Broken chairs?"
"No, nothing more today." The ink stain could be covered with the desk... Or explained away later... "Just please, _please_ don't tell Cinale I told you! Or anyone else..." He didn't want any nasty rumors floating around about his blushing bride. Fielton raised an eyebrow. "You're worried that I'm going to tell people that my Hallsecond, the man I trust to help me run this Hall, engaged in scandalous behavior in his office and _broke_ his brand new desk?"
Fielton snorted. "I wondering if you broke your head, too. I'd just as soon pretend this never happened, Daigoro. And it had best not happen again."
Daigoro raised his hands pacifyingly. "Oh no! No no, never again. I'll guard the desk with my life, I swear."
"Good." Fielton put on a stern expression. "Now get out of here before I change my mind about letting you have a new desk."
"Yes, sir. Thank you, sir." Daigoro didn't have to be told twice! He hurried through the door before before he could risk more of the Hallmaster's wrath.
