Daigoro smiled sheepishly at the cook as he walked into the kitchen. He knew how late it was, but his hunger finally got the better of him. Cinale always had a little something for residents who had forgotten their dinner... again...
"You." She pointed her ladle straight at him as he approached. "I had a sneaking suspicion that you were going to show up here tonight. And look! I was right."
"I thought it was still a bit earlier. I guess I got lost in my work." He said contritely as he took a seat at one of the tables. "Besides, this way I can have your wonderful company while I eat. Something smells wonderful."
"The wonderful thing you're smelling is a roast drenched in a type of gravey I concocted today," she grinned as she turned her attention back to preparing his meal. "It's tangy, sweet and spicy. Most people seemed to really like it..." Actually, _everyone_ seemed to really like it, but Cinale tried act modestly...at times.
"Hmmm. Tangy, sweet _and_ spicy." He smiled at her appreciatively. "My kind of dish."
"Here we are," she grinned as she brought the plate over to him. Then she handed him a fork, her eyes glinting. "Tell me what you think."
Daigoro leaned over the dish and smelled deeply. He looked up at her with a boyish grin. "Well, it smells wonderful." Taking the fork in hand he stabbed a piece and brought it to his mouth. He nodded as he chewed, looking up at Cinale his eyes smiled as his mouth was busy appreciating the fruits of her labor. Swallowing he finally replied, "Did I see there was a whole roast like this? I think I'll take the whole thing."
She laughed, and the look in her eyes was one of delight. "You can have as much as you want, hon. There's _plenty_. Once, of course, you finish what's on your plate!" One finger pointed at the dish in front of him, her tone teasingly stern.
"Where are the veggitables then?" He asked, looking down at the contents of the plate piteously. "When my mother said things like that to me there were usually veggitables involved."
"There're no veggies, hon. They don't stay crisp and fresh candlemarks after dinnertime, you know." Chuckling, she came around the table to sit across from him.
"You know I was going to say you would make the perfect mother," he said chuckling, "but I can't imagine _any_ mother without veggitables."
"And I can't even imagine the said veggitables not being crisp and fresh! You can't eat veggies if they're not crisp... Unless they're cooked, of course..." She paused thoughtfully. "And don't you worry, hon. If I ever become a mother, my children will be up to their eyes in veggies and fruits."
"_If_? You don't mean _when_?" He asked curiously. Somehow he just could not picture a future for Cinale that did not involve children.
She shrugged a shoulder and took a sudden interest in studying the lines of the grain on the table. "The man has to come first." She trailed her nail lightly across the wood. Cinale glanced up at him and gave him a small smile. "I can't have younglings without the man now, can I?"
"Well, I guess that's true. At least, I haven't heard of it happening yet." He gave her a sly wink. "But truly, Cinale, you of all people can't be in want of a man!"
"And why not? All women think about it - especially women like me who're not getting any younger." She shrugged again and grinned slightly. "It'd be hard to find one who'd be able to put up with me _and_ my work. I'm married to my kitchen, you know, Daigoro."
"But a kitchen can give you children, beauty," the Hallsecond said as he reached across the table to squeeze her hand. "All you have to do is say the word and man a man would show interest in you. You have a lot of offer."
"It's sweet of you to tell me that, hon," she murmured as she gently returned his squeeze. She studied their hands, trying to think of something more to say to bring their usual teases back into play here. Cinale had never really spoken to anyone about her musings before, and it made her a little uncomfortable...well, more than a little. But she realized that she didn't really mind talking about this with him. It didn't make it easy, but it was nice to be perfectly clear and honest about this whole issue, for once.
Daigoro regarded her carefully. "I'll tell you what. Why don't we get you out of the kitchens for an evening? Why don't you go to the dinning hall tomorrow for dinner with me? It would be good to get out with people for a while."
"Me? Leave my domain?" she asked in mock horror, but she was grinning. "Leave it all alone and unprotected?"
"You seem to have no qualms about leaving _me_ alone and unprotected from all those starving men and women." He teased. "It's either you escort me along that long walk among those knashing teeth and hungry stares, or I will cower in famished fear in my office."
"Well, we can't have that! How else will you _eat_, Daigoro?" she laughed, patting his hand with her other one. "I'll come with you, hon."
"Good." He said, reclaiming his hand and shoveling another piece into his mouth. "But I have to warn you," he said with a grin between bites, "there will be plenty of men in there. You just might kind some of them to your liking."
"And I'm sure there'll be plenty of women there, too, to catch your eye, hmm?"
Daigoro rolled his eyes as he thought about all the petitions he had been recievin since he became Hallsecond. "Please, I am up to my big ears in elligable young women. I would rather just enjoy my meal."
"I was just teasing you, hon," Cinale grinned.
"No you weren't, you were trying to marry me off just like everyone else, and I will tell you now I will have none of it! Well," he gave her a broad grin, "at least not yet."
She laughed and gave him a knowing look. "A man can never resist the idea of a woman for long, hmm?"
Daigoro gave her a little wink. "Not if its the right woman."
