She waited anxiously in her Father's office. There had been a message sent to her about a candlemark or so after she'd been gone to her rooms.
There had been nothing wrong in what she had done that day. Surely he couldn't deem it unseemly or unladylike to greet guests to the Hall.
Weyrfolk or not, he'd insist on politeness to a visitor, wouldn't he?
Her father greeted her with a short nod when he arrived, sitting across from her at his desk and folding his hands together. "Do you remember the visit from Hallmaster Daynar and his family?" he asked without wasting time on preambles.
"Papa?" she queried. This was not at all what she expected. Where was the lecture? Maybe that was coming next. "Yes, Papa, I do."
Fielton nodded and picked a letter up off his desk. "You obviously made an impression. Daynar has sent an invitation for you to spend some time at the Smith Hall with his daughter. It might also be a good chance for you to get to know his sons... they're fine young men."
"I'm sure they are Papa," she said, keeping the curiosity to a minimum. The dinner had gone all right from her point of view. Daynar's daughter had seemed rather young and boring, but the boys. Well the older one seemed like his father, but the younger, he reminded her of someone. Who it was she wasn't sure, but he was a little familiar.
"I know you're young, Fieayz, but with my promotion, your marriage prospects have expanded. Many men would be happy to forge a marriage bond with the Vintner Hall. I married your mother before we knew what we wanted, and it brought neither of us joy. I'd like to see you married to someone who you would be happy to be a wife to."
"I, I don't understand Papa. Is this because I spoke to some friends from the Weyr?" She was convinced that she would be in trouble, and perhaps she was being sent away because of that.
Fielton hesitated a moment before shaking his head. "I would have expected to start looking for a husband for you soon in any case. The timing of the invitation from Daynar is simply a coincidence." That part was a lie... he'd received the invitation over a sevenday ago. It had only occurred to him recently, however, that being in the Smith Hall would ensure few of Fieayz's friends could find her.
"I'm not in trouble then?" she asked after a moment thinking on his words.
"I don't much care for your choice in friends," Fielton replied a little stiffly. "But unless you did something more than talk..."
"No Papa, I merely greeted them, and showed them inside on a cold day."
"Then that's that." Fielton laced his fingers together. "I'll be sending a reply to Daynar... I'd like to have you packed and ready to leave within a sevenday or two. I'm sure you'll enjoy a visit with his daughter."
"Yes Papa," Fieayz looked down as she answered. Moving again wouldn't be ideal, but perhaps she might have more freedom at the Smith Hall.
Fielton was thinking just the opposite--that his daughter would be safely tucked away from temptation until he could get her married off. It was a relief, to say the least. "If you need any help, let me know. I'm sure your sister will help you pack."
Jielta would probably pack for her, if she had any say in the matter, thought Fieayz. "Will there be a dragonrider coming for me?" she asked. The Smith Hall was too far to travel to otherwise.
"I'll send for one," Fielton replied firmly. One from Dragonsfall, as was proper--one who didn't know his daughter.
"I understand Papa, I'll start sorting my things out in the morning." That was what she hoped he wanted to hear. A move might not be ideal, but then Garnet Valley was closer to River Bluff...
