Characters: Az'uka, Kiala
Description: Az'uka and Kiala discuss the matter of perception when being a dragonrider or a candidate for that matter.
Location: Dragonsfall Weyr
Date: month 5, day 5 of Turn 4
Slipping his jacket over his shoulders Az'uka made his way out of his weyr and paused next to the mass of twilight blue hide that was his dragon. **How is it that you get to spend your whole day asleep on that ledge in the sun? ** The rider asked of his dragon in a mock scolding tone. }: There is no Thread today :{ Nilzuth replied rather in matter-of-fact tone, for a dragon anyway. His large eyes peered at his rider before he shifted his weight so more of his body was exposed to the sun and closed them again saying nothing more there was only a faint rumble that could only be called the equivalent of dragon snoring. Az'uka rolled his and back Nilzuth a pat. "Well, you earned it my friend," he said in a quite tone as he headed down to the lower caverns, perhaps in search of something to eat.
Kiala was just entering the dining cavern when she noticed a rider coming in at the same time. She looked up and realized it was Az'uka. While she hadn't had much contact with him, she had helped him bathe his dragon a time or two and just recognized him from being around. After all, he was a bit hard to miss! "Hello Az'uka, are you heading in for the midday meal?" she asked and smiled up.
Catching the voice his blue eyes glanced to the side and caught sight of the young woman he knew was one of the candidates at Dragonsfall at the moment, though for a second her name eluded his mind. }:Kiala { Nilzulth supplied }:She gives a good back scrub :{ was the rumble of approval from the large blue as he dozed off again. the comment brought a smile to the rider's face as faced Kiala. "I was Kiala, did you want to join me?" he asked.
"That sounds good. I always like to have company at mealtime. How's Nilzulth been?" Kiala replied, falling into step with Az'uka.
Keeping step with Kiala he gave a smile "He's as much of a rascal as last time," was his encompassing comment, "He says 'hello' to you though." the dragonrider added as they crossed over for the midday meal.
Kiala laughed. "Well, let him know I say hello back then. He's always a character whenever I help you bathe him, so it's fun times had by all."
"If you enjoy getting soaked" The rider chuckled, knowing Nilzuth's usual habit of getting all of his bathing helpers absolutely dreaded, much to the embarrassment of his rider at times. **Kiala says 'hello' back** Az'uka informed his dragon, and got no reply, the blue must have been asleep by now.
"Don't I know it! I remember when I helped you a while ago and after I was done, it felt like I might have been standing in a downpour," Kiala said and giggled. "He's cute though, so I don't mind."
"He has that affect on people" Az'uka mused out loud to the first of what Kiala had said and beamed at the second part. "He'll appreciate that" he returned to her comment about Nilzuth. **She called you cute...** he bespoke his dragon and felt Nilzuth stir. }: Does this mean I get another back scrub? :{ was the half asleep comment. "Rumour has it you're the best at dragon back scrubs" he said looking at Kiala his smile still in place. "Well In Nilzuth's opinion anyway"
"Well, he isn't the first to tell me that!" Kiala said and laughed again. "Although, it sure is nice to get such good feedback on my skills at back scrubbing! Hopefully I'll be able to use them on my own dragon someday."
"Of course you will, and she'll be the luckiest dragon in Pern" Az'uka returned. }: I beg to differ, _I_ am the luckiest dragon in Pern, I have you :{ Nilzuth interjected. **And I you, all dragons are lucky in that respect; getting the right rider for them. ** }:True:{ the blue rumbled and returned to his dozing.
"I think it's a prejudiced thought, knowing my dragon will be the luckiest," Kiala said. "Each rider seems to think their dragon is the best."
Az'uka chuckled "And each dragon believes he or she is the luckiest because of the riders they chose as well" was his return. "So your dragon will be the luckiest because she has you, just as Nilzuth thinks he's the luckiest because he has me; you're right though, it's all a matter or perception."
"Hear hear!" Kiala agreed.
In the time the two had been talking, both had served themselves and moved over to one of the tables in the lower caverns. Manners had him pulling back one of the chairs from the table for Kiala. "Still, you'll make a great dragonrider".
Kiala blushed and sat down. "Thank you! I hope so, but it sure is hard to wait and go out to the Sands every time and not come back with a dragon. It can be rather disheartening."
Az'uka sat down across from her, "I stood a few times before Nilzuth found me," he told her "That doesn't change your potential to be a dragonrider, it just means you have to keep standing so the dragon that is meant for you will know were to find you."
}: I would have found you even if you hadn't been on the sands. I knew you were there :{ Was Nilzuth's comment, it would seem the dragon was listening more to what his rider was saying than getting some rest.
"Thanks for the pep talk. It does help to hear others so encouraging," Kiala replied, taking a few bites of food.
He smiled "I'm not telling you anything you don't already know" was his light-hearted reply.
Kiala smiled back, "This is true, but it helps to hear others say it sometimes."
"I see" he drawled, "So you trying to say that not enough people say it?"
Kiala shrugged. "No, but I wonder when I'm out there Standing. No one's ever said it, but some do have a disappointment in their eyes when they see that I'm left once again."
"Then my suggestion would be to stop worrying about others think, when your dragon hatches she'll find you," was his comment, "Or you could always stop standing; but I'd never wish that on anyone." He added with a small smile.
Kiala shook her head vigorously. "No, I'll just keep putting myself up there and see what happens. That's all I can really do so, I'll do it then."
Az'uka's smile widened, seeing her determination and hearing it in her words. "To Impression then" was his comment.
"To Impression," Kiala replied, raising her glass.
