(continued from Too Old For Naps)

"Okay Vanson, shall we go and find your mama, and see if its okay for you to have a bubbly pie?" Tayette asked, expecting to see his face fall again, but knowing there was no other way around the problem. She couldn't outright disobey his mother, it could start all manner of complications, but she hoped the woman, whoever she was, would go easy on the little boy.

Vanson sighed but nodded, reaching out to take the lady's hand and take her home to see his Mama. It didn't take them all that long to get there. When they arrived, Vanson hesitated before opening the door. He knew his Mama probably hadn't even realized he was gone, probably thinking he was napping with his sister like he was supposed to be.

"It'll be okay." Tayette smiled down at him, "I'm sure your mama will be happier that you have come and asked first, and she may forgive you for sneaking out." Oh how she hoped that was true.

Feeling doubtful, Vanson opened the door to their quarters. He peeked in and spotted his mother right away and, just by coincidence, she happened to glance towards the door at that some moment. Her eyes met his and she frowned in apparent confusion, "Vanson? How... What are you doing out there?"

"Come on, Sweetling, inside with you." Tayette rested an reassuring hand on the youngsters shoulder, whilst opening the door a little wider.

Vanson let himself be urged through the door. He peeked up at his mother and noticed she didn't -look- mad. She mostly looked confused.
Which was way better than mad.

"What's going on?" Yvannia asked the young woman who followed her son into their quarters. The boy was fidgeting, like he often did when he'd been up to mischief. Various scenarios began playing through her head as she tried to figure out how the little boy she was sure was asleep with his sister had slipped by her and found himself being escorted home.

Tayette could sense the child's unease, and stepped forward, "Hello, I'm Tayette, one of the kitchen workers." she flashed an encouraging smile at the other woman. "I - I found Vanson in the kitchens, he was - a little hungry..."
she knew how lame that sounded even to herself, but there wasn't much else she could do to protect the boy.

This astonished Yvannia even more, "Vanson, didn't you eat lunch?" She knew he had, she'd given him his lunch herself. He'd eaten everything on his plate even. "And what were you doing in the Kitchens when you're supposed to be in your room?"

Vanson mumbled a quiet yes to the lunch question but his only answer to the other was to fidget even more as he tried to think of something to say that wouldn't get him into more trouble.

"I think it was the smell of fresh bubbly and redfruit pies, that enticed him into the kitchens." Tayette chuckled lightly, "We're forever chasing the apprentices out, so what chance does a child have against such temptation."
Though this wasn't technically the truth, the pies had been cool, the scent of them did still linger on in the dining hall.

Shooting her young son a knowing look Yvannia replied, "Well thank you for bringing him home. I'm not sure how he was close enough to the kitchens to smell bubbly pies, seeing as how he's meant to be asleep right now, of course." She raised an eyebrow when Vanson looked up and caught her eye, clearly waiting a response from the boy.

"Well, I... Um...," Vanson fidgeted as he spoke. He glanced up at the lady who'd walked him home, hoping that she might have some idea of the perfect thing to say. She was a grown up just like Mama was so she should know what Mama would want to hear, shouldn't she?

"I just wondered," Tayette took a step forward, "whether he may not be a little old for naps? That could be why he isn't sleeping." she winced a little, wondering what the woman's reaction would be.

Yvannia blinked in astonishment at that, it was the last thing she'd expected. Someone she barely knew telling her that her son was too old to nap? She had been thinking lately that the boy might be able to stop napping with his sister after his birthingday a few months from now... but that didn't mean that she'd made up her mind. "Perhaps, perhaps not." She replied with a frown. "That doesn't answer why he was near the kitchens though."
