"Boredom, may be?" the words slipped out before she could stop them and she was certain now that she had overstepped the mark. "Look, may be I should go? I just wanted to ask if it was alright that I give him a pie - I also wanted you to know he wasn't _here_, with you.
But I think I may have made things worse." she dropped her gaze with the other woman, looking at the little boy again giving him a half-hearted smile.
"I am sorry," she repeated, once more meeting the mothers gaze," - but, look - "
she took another step forward, "if or when you come down to the dining hall, I promised he could have a pie, I'd like to make good on my promise."
Yvannia felt badly then. The girl hadn't meant any harm and had done a good thing in bringing her son home. She could only imagine the panic she'd have felt if she'd discovered Vanson gone. "Wait, you don't have to leave." She gestured for Tayette to join her. "I am grateful you brought him home."
"Vanson, go to your room and play quietly. Don't wake your sister,"
she instructed her son who scampered off obediently.
"I couldn't have _not_ brought him back." Tayette smiled, taking another step into the room. "I've had little experience dealing with children," she admitted, "but that's all about to change. So I just figured it's what I would hope someone would do for me."
"You're expecting?" Yvannia asked, waving the kitchen worker to sit.
Tayette took the offered seat, and nodded, her eyes shining, "Yes, I found out a sevenday ago. Mornings are a pain, but by this time, I'm starting to feel good
- and grateful." she smiled serenely, glad that the other woman now appeared genuinely friendly.
"You're lucky if your morning sickness is easing up this early!"
Yvannia laughed. "Mine lasted well into my sixth month, with both of them. But congratulations! Is it your first?"
"Yes - and probably my last, if my age is a handicap." Tayette smiled, her hand caressing her still flat stomach, "I can still hardly believe its happened to me. I tried for Turns and Turns and nothing. Now - one green flight over the Hall and -" she clicked her fingers, "- I'm pregnant." she finished.
That made Yvannia laugh again. "Well, I've heard that dragonflights are lucky for such things."
"If I'd known that was what it took, it may have saved me Turns of heartache, but then again, I prefer the babies father, to the man I married." she dropped her gaze, her hands fidgeted in her lap, she still hadn't talk to Hartam, had avoided the dining hall and the Tavern for a sevenday - she really thought he was the one, but now - she sighed heavily, her thoughts getting the better of her.
It was obvious that something was bothering the other woman, but Yvannia didn't want to pry. She tried cheering her up with the observation, "Well, I suppose it's true that everything happens for a reason, right?"
"I guess so." Tayette smiled, meeting the other woman's eyes again. "But, tell me, what reason was there for today? For us to meet? Or for me to put my foot in it, over Vanson?" she asked.
Yvannia laughed, "Well, no harm done with Vanson. Perhaps he is a bit old for naps." She shrugged. "As for a reason, well, making friends is always worthwhile."
How far she had come in the past two months or so, since she had made Hartam's acquaintance, and how much she had to be grateful to him for. Not least of which was giving her the confidence to ignore the rumours that had been gossip around the Hall, and step out to make friends.
"Yes, that's true." Tayette nodded, and realised she really was pleased this had happened, she had a lot to thank Vanson for too, "I should give him an extra bubbly pie for today, for giving me the chance to meet you, too."
