B'drin was sitting on his weyrledge looking out at the world. His heart was heavy as he held a scrap of paper in his hand. Writen across it was sadness. His father and brother had gone into the mines. They had been there looking for something. No one knew what. The letter said that in a mere moment things had gone wrong. . one moment they were there and the next there was dust everywhere. They were caught in there as the ceiling fell. I'm so sorry..

He read the line again. His father and brother had been caught as the ceiling fell. His father had died as they pulled him from the rubble. His brother had survived but was in bad shape. B'drin thought of the last time he had seen his father. It had been the day his brown came into his life. Lumyth nudged his rider. He could feel his riders hurt and wanted to help him. He sent B'drin all his love. B'drin wasn't sure if he could cry. He hadn't been on good terms with his father but ha had never wished him harm. Now he was dead and he couldn't talk to him and try to understand how his father felt. He was gone. His brother had barely survived. He sat there like a man carved of the stone around him. He sat so still that he could be mistaken for a carving, except for the one small tear that fell unheaded from his eye.
