"Shh! Bry keep still and don't say a word." Ednes covered his lips with his finger, "If we keep quiet, they won't know we're here." The pair stood outside the classroom, eyeing the apprentices as they sampled the wines. Ednes had seen his father do this many many times, but Causton had never allowed Ed to partake. With only two turns left before he could apprentice, he was eager to learn as much as possible before he "But why Ed? Dar said we're not allowed in here."
"This is where the apprentices learn about the different tastes to the wines. You wanna know too, don't you?" he asked, in a hushed whisper.
"See the class is almost over, and they won't clear everything away right away so we can sam-"
Two large paws clamped gently around one of each boy's shoulders. "You will do nothing of the sort, young man," the Hallmaster's Second said in a voice that he had intended to be firm, but it was colored with amusement.
Both boys stood stock still. They had only been at the Hall two sevendays, but knew the rules well enough to understand they were in trouble.
"I didn't do anything." Bryton said quickly, turning his head and looking up at the Hallsecond. "Honest!"
"Shhh! Bry." Ed warned, "Sorry Sir, we were only looking."
"Are you sure?" the Hallsecond asked with a look of suspicion. "It sounded to me as though you had a mind to do a little sampling once the class was done."
Bryton dropped his gaze from the Hallsecond to the floor, not willing to meet the man's eyes. "You'll, you'll not tell Dar, will you?" he asked in a small voice.
"I don't know, Bryton," Daigoro said thoughtfully. "There's a reason why you must be an apprentice before you can sample the wines. What you were about to do could have made you and your brother really sick. You didn't want to make your brother sick, now did you?"
"I'm almost old enough to be an apprentice." Ednes stated baldly. "Bry wouldn't have tasted them, he doesn't like the taste of any drinks but water." he stared the Hallsecond in the eyes, not willing to show his nervousness, and hoping to brazen it out. Hoping with all his might that the Hallsecond wouldn't see the trembles that shook his body.
The Hallsecond wasn't buying it. "Well, almost old enough to be an apprentice means you are you're both old enough and small enough to get into my brewing vats and scrub them clean. Yes, I think you're old enough for that."
"What?!" with surprise both boys exclaimed at the punishment.
"But you can't do that!" Ednes retorted, "We're not apprentices, we can't..." his excuses were running out.
"If we do that, will you still tell dar?" Bryton asked. More worried about what their father would say if he found out what they had been about to do.
"No, as long as you do a good job I won't tell you father," the Hallsecond promised. Though he would make sure to be picky enough in his inspection to be sure neither boy wanted to try their hand at apprenticing again any time soon! Apprenticing was hard work, and he wanted to be sure the boys understood that.
"We will Sir." Bryton nodded emphatically whilst glancing at his elder brother, then he nudged Ednes when he saw the stubborn set of his jaw.
"C'mon Ed, you don't want dar finding out, do you?" he asked with a nervous glance to the Hallsecond.
"Okay, we'll do it." Ednes nodded, as if he had any choice in the matter, and was bestowing a favour on Daigoro. "And we'll do a good job too." he answered determinedly.
Daigoro would expect no less. "All right then, lads. This way."
