"Hi, An'dr. Is that seat free?" Kustaava greeted her friend at the weyr's dining hall.
"Sure it is," he replied with a smile for the greenrider. "You want a cup of klah?" he asked, gesturing to the pot next to him.
"Sure I do. I haven't seen you a while," Ava replied and set her dinner to the table. "I've been terrible busy with this new weyrling class. First there was the preparations for the Hatching and now we got hands full of new riders and young dragonets," she chatted.
The bluerider poured a drink as he watched the greenrider take a seat. She was pretty, he knew that much and he wondered why he sometimes became lost for words around her. "Your klah."
"Thank's. So what have you been up to lately? Let's see, since Mindath's mating flight?"
"Wing duties," was the short reply. "I had to take some hides to the Harper Hall, so I had a chance to see my mother. And I drew some transport runs as well."
"I wish I had wing duties instead of babysitting weyrlings," Ava grumbled good-naturedly.
"Well if you want to swap," he joked. He'd been there as a Weyrling Assistant, and he knew why they'd kept him there, not a lack of ability or anything, just that he'd not been prepared to impress.
"I don't think they let me," Ava mummbled, her mouth full. She was kept in weyrling wing because she had tried to fly on Mindath before they were ready for it.
"One day maybe," said An'dr as he reached for a bread roll on the side of his plate. He split it, and started to spread butter on it. "You'll get to fly all over."
"Meanwhile, I'm stuck with the weyrlings," Ava said.
"They can't be that bad, can they?"
"Well, most of them aren't," Ava admitted. "But there's always few stuck-up wherry's arses. And it's really interresting to get a work with the gold dragonette and watch her grow up."
"That should be interesting, I mean there was a gold in my class, but traing a gold must be different to training with one."
"It probably is," Ava guessed.
"Well maybe after a while you can tell me." He flashed her a quick grin.
"I'd like that."
"After we get past that feed-bath-sleep -part of the first month or so," Ava promised with a laugh.
"It's worth it though, once you get past those first few sevendays, right?"
"I suppose so. I haven't been doing this all that long yet," Ava replied.
"You'll see."
"Yeah," Kustaava grunted and ate in silence for a while.
"Just wait until they start asking awkward questions," said An'dr. "One of the dragonets asked my Pluserth why the sky was blue!"
Ava nearly spat out her mouthful when she started to laugh. "I haven't had that happen yet, I wouldn't know what to answer", she said after she recovered.
"Pluserth told the little green that way was the way it was meant to be.
Like he's blue."
"I have to remember that answer," Ava grinned.
"You will," he said returning her smile. "I bet you'll get just as good a question at some point. Weyrlings are full of them."
"I sure was," Ava agreed.
"Bet I asked more," he teased.
"You Impressed from the Stands, right? I at least have few monts to settle in and adjust to weyrlife before I impressed."
"I don't know who was more surprised, me, my parents or the people here,"
admitted An'dr. It had been a shock to them all to see the young apprentice as he had been then come down to the side and stand there calling out to them that a dragon had chosen him.
"Must have been strange situation. I mean, ordinary impression is strange enough, when you suddenly have another mind sharing your thoughts. Almost as strange as waking up with unknown rider after a mating flight," Ava said with a roll of her eyes.
"It was..." An'dr's voice trailed off as he struggled to sort out words to describe his thoughts. "It was good, because Pluserth and I found each other, but scary because all of a sudden I had to leave everything I knew to be here with him. Thank Faranth my older sister was here too, it'd have been a lot worse if I'd been totally alone."
"Mmh," Ava murmured thoughtfully. She realized she had finished her meal while they were talking. She leaned backwards, gave him a mischievous smile and asked: "Do you have any plans for tonite? I had a nice view from my weyr. If you'll have any time to actually look at them."
"Now that you mention it, I'm not busy, and I would like to see that view."
"Good," Ava said. "Let's get the dishes to the kitchen and go then."
