'Your First Candlemarks as a Weyrling'. Shards, Birigundi could teach this lecture with all the times he'd heard it over the Turns. "I bet you have somewhere you'd rather be too, hmm?" he whispered as he took the seat beside Nasiria just as the lecture started. Nasiria smiled. "Almost anywhere. You would think they'd give us a pass after having listened so many times." He sighed and crossed his arms across himself. "I think T'mahl's soiling himself with this being his first Hatching as Weyrlingmaster. He just has to be sure everything goes perfectly." She suppressed a laugh. She was glad someone else saw through T'mahl's diligence. "Well, unfortunately, he can't control everything." She smiled thinking of her plans for the evening.
Birigundi snorted. "Do you think if someone pointed that out to him he'd let us out of classes a little earlier?"
She raised an eyebrow. "Not a chance.this one's not making a move unless it's in the rulebook." She sighed and leaned back in her chair. "Yeah, well, since when have we played by the rules?" Birigundi asked, the spark of an idea coming to mind. "What are you thinking?" she asked, surprised to find a kindred soul. She knew Birigundi, of course. She knew he had stood at least as many times as she had, maybe more, she couldn't recall. She tried to remember his story.
Two women and two babies is all she could come up with. She decided that this fellow long-standing candidate was worthy of her acceptance at least.
She would wait to see if he merited friendship...maybe if he Impressed Bronze or Brown.
He lowered his voice and leaned closer. "I'm thinking of getting out of here. I'm not sure if I can get you out of here too, though..."
"Oh, you _have_ to take me with you," she whispered and tried not to giggle. "Please? I'll do anything." When she said it she had meant "anything to help with the plan", but after it was out, she realized he could take it as an offer for something more. She quickly looked him up and down and decided to leave the offer open.
"If I had a mark for every time a woman said that to me..." He sighed dramatically. "Let me borrow something to write with."
**By the First Egg, does he really think I look like someone who would actually have something to take _notes_ with?** She elbowed Calirin and told her she needed something to write with. When Calirin had dug a spare out of her pack and handed it over to Nasiria, she passed it to Birigundi.
Birigundi meanwhile leaned over and borrowed a blank scrap of hide from the boy dutifully taking notes. "How neat is your handwriting?" he asked Nasiria quietly. "Better than yours," she assured him.
"Good. Write down what I tell you." He quietly dictated what he wanted the note to say word for word. When she was finished he carefully rolled it and silently called to his flit, Leaf, to come to him. After a moment of indecision and much persuading on his part, the little green popped into the classroom from /between/ and settle on his desk. T'mahl frowned at the disturbance as he set his chalk down. "Birigundi, you know the rules. No pets in the classroom." "Yes sir, I'm sorry," the candidate nodded contritely, holding up the rolled hide as if it had been deposited on his desk. "She would not come unless it were important. May I read it?" "Bring it here," the Weyrlingmaster said sternly. Birigundi gave Leaf a quick scratch on her eyeridge for a job well done. He shot a quick wink at Nasiria. Making his way to the front of the room he handed the Weyrlingmaster the roll. T'mahl opened it and quickly scanned the contents.
Handing it back he said, "It seems your daughter's fostermother needs you to come at once. Lyndi is running a fever. You may be excused. Make sure you get the notes from someone." "Thank you, sir," the Candidate said, taking the rolled hide back, schooling his face into a look of concern before turning to walk back to his place. Gathering his things he whispered under his breath to Narisia, "Just wait for me. I'll think of some way to get you out of here. Might take a few minutes."
She watched him incredulously. She had wondered when she wrote the note how he was going to get her out of there with him. It never occurred to her that he would leave alone. Still, he said he would get her out too. She smiled, but whispered between gritted teeth, "So help me, you had better think of something quick."
"Or what?" he asked innocently as he threw his bag over his shoulder.
"Trust me." "If I had a mark for every time a _man_ said that to _me_..." He left, and Nasiria sat there wondering if she had just been manipulated. She wasn't sure, but she decided to go ahead and plan her revenge, just in case.
About a quarter candlemark later a hurried looking kitchen worker opened the lecture room door. "Excuse me, Weyrlingmaster, but I have a message for one of your candidates. It seems the firelizard Egg Nasiria has left at our harth has begun rocking and if she does not hurry the flit will go ferral.
Forgive the interruption." "Nasiria? You have a flit egg?" The weyrlingmaster asked turning towards the candidate, a slight look of doubt in his eye. She was not known for her great regard for following rules. And yet a member of the kitchen staff had come personally...
**Apparently so,** she suppressed a giggle and hoped the smile on her face would be taken for excitement over the impending hatching of her imaginary flit. "Yes, sir."
Well, he was in the middle of a lecture. He wasn't going to take time out just to get to the bottom of this. It wasn't fair to the other Candidates.
"Right, well, you better it up then." "Yes, sir." She added. "Thank you, sir." As she turned to gather her things, she shot a warning look at Calirin and Sonesra to wipe the confused stares off their faces. She left the room feeling completely triumphant, and more than a little envious of Birigundi's cunning.
"So, if T'mahl asks, you were too late," Birigundi grinned, leaning against the wall as the Candidate emerged from the lecture room. He looked so smug. He had every right to be, and she wanted to laugh, but she couldn't stand to give it to him. "You'd better be glad that worked because I was in there plotting your demise."
"Really?" he asked, reaching out to run a finger appreciatively down her arm. "I was out here plotting my reward..." She bit off her laughter at his quick response. She was impressed. But now that she was on this side of the classroom door, she wasn't about to give it up so easily. She leaned closer to him. "Well, you let me know when you think of something, will you?" She walked down the hall, making sure that her hips held his attention all the way.
