Nasiria exited the Hatching grounds with Calirin and tried to keep her composure. "I've got to go," Calirin said apologetically. "My parents are waving me over." Nasiria nodded, not trusting herself to speak. "See you later,"
Calirin left her and walked into the arms of her mother and father.
Nasiria left as quickly as she could and made her way to the weyr she shared with Nasianna. At least she could sleep in her own bed tonight and not in the Candidate barracks. She would go get her things tomorrow. She didn't feel like seeing any other Candidates--Impressed or not. She entered her weyr and listened. Hearing nothing, she moved into her room and collapsed onto her bed. She had almost drifted off when she heard her mother enter the weyr. Irritated, she rolled over and feigned sleep, wishing she had thought to shut her door.
Nasianna quietly knocked on the wall just inside the her daughter's door.
"Nasiria?" She waited. "Nasiria?" She entered the room and sat on the edge of her daughter's bed. She put her hand on Nasiria's calf and jumped when Nasiria moved and sat up.
"What, mother?" she moved to the head of the bed so that her mother could not reach her and crossed her arms and legs.
"Nasiria, I'm so sorry about today," her mother's eyes were moist.
"I'm fine, mother," she tossed her hair back and glared at Nasianna.
"I know you'd like everyone to believe that, but I know."
"I'm _fine_ mother. You did your motherly duty. You can go now." She hated the pitiful look her mother was giving her.
Nasianna shook her head. "Nasiria, this is not about duty. I care about you." "Right, OK. Well, I'm fine." She sniffed and looked around the room.anywhere but at her mother.
Looking intently at her daughter, she said, "You're not fine. I know you are disappointed."
"I'm not disappointed. See? You don't know anything about me. There wasn't a gold out there today, mother. I'm _glad_ I didn't Impress this time," she lied.
"How can you say even that?" "How can I say it? Easily. That's how. I'll Impress one day, mother. Don't you worry about me-not that you ever did anyway--and I'll Impress gold, you can count on it," she smiled at her own bravado and almost allowed herself to believe it.
Nasianna shook her head. "Well, I just wanted you to know I understand.
Remember, I didn't Impress Lorianth until my fourth-"
"Yes, your fourth time to Stand, I know. I've heard the story." Nasiria did her best to look bored.
She cleared her throat. "Yes, I suppose so." She looked down. "Is there anything I can do for you?"
"Yes mother, you can leave me alone so that I can get some sleep. They woke us up at the crack of dawn and I want to be fresh for the Hatching Feast."
She said smiling mischievously.
Sighing heavily, her mother lifted herself off the bed. Nasiria lay down again and turned away from the door and her mother. "OK, well, I'll see you at the Feast, then." Nasianna said.
**Not likely,** she thought, but said, "Sure," and closed her eyes.
