A Brief Chat

Writers: Francesca, Paula
Date Posted: 13th March 2008

Characters: Jadorin, Zelanka
Description: Jadorin comes by Zelanka's office with a request and some questions.
Location: Amber Hills Hold
Date: month 8, day 6 of Turn 4

"I want you back here in a candlemark," Jadorin told his apprentices as they rushed out the door, before putting on his own jacket and heading towards the main part of the Hold. He had been meaning to speak to the Headwoman for several days, but always managed to have something else to do that kept him busy until the evening meal. It wasn't that he didn't want to speak with her, but the Journeyman much preferred informal meetings to going to someone's office to talk.

Tini gave him a little chirp of encouragement, caressing his cheek with her head. He grinned for a moment and gave the green a little scratch.
She crooned for a bit at the attention but was soon distracted by a fair of firelizards looping and turning high above. With another chirp, she flew off to have some fun. Jadorin wished he could watch her fly, but it was cold outside and he needed to be back at the workshop before the apprentices. He was soon standing before the Headwoman's door and, after taking a deep breath and letting it out, knocked.

"Please, get in!", Zelanka called, glad of the interruption. She was going thru the inventory records and studying the rows and rows of numbers in neat columns were starting to make her eyes hurt. She was rubbing the bridge of her nose when the weaver entered.

Encouraged by her tone, Jadorin entered. "Good afternoon Headwoman.
Is this a good time to talk? I promise I won't take long." Besides a brief meeting with her when he had first arrived, he had not had any contact with the Headwoman at all. He hoped that this meeting would be a chance for him to get to know a bit about her, as well as to learn more about the relationship between the weavers and the Hold.

"Afternoon, journeyman Jadorin. It's a perfect time," Zelanka assured him, "I'm always available for the hold's crafter's."

"Thank you," he replied, taking a seat. "Some of our apprentices will be learning the basics of dyeing over the next sevendays. We have some scraps of fabric for them to practice on, but I was wondering if the Hold had any old clothes that can't be worn anymore that we could use. White fabric would be best, but light colors would do as well."

"Hhmm, I'm not sure. Old clothes that are too worn to be used any longer are often turned into a cleaning rags. But I can check out.
Maybe there are some that aren't cut to rags yet," Zelanka replied.

"That's what I assumed, but I thought I'd ask, just in case you had a surplus of old clothes," Jadorin said with a nod. "Besides that, I just wanted to drop by to see if there is anything the Hold needs that the weavers could help with, perhaps new rugs or tapestries that need to be made."

"No, nothing like that at the moment, I'm afraid. Truth to be told, the past turn has been busy with the sudden increase of the hold's population, that I've been stretched to meet the basic needs and haven't have time to think about that kind of things," Zelanka replied bit apologetically.

Jadorin nodded. "Of course. I understand. And I can assure you that we weavers don't need anything. It seems that people are always in need of new Gather clothes, or other items that we can provide. In fact, just a few days ago your husband came in, albeit a bit unwillingly, to be measured."

"Well, it was about a time," Zelanka snorted with a smile. "I did nag him about it long enough!"

"Yes, it certainly wasn't his idea to be fitted," Jadorin added, amused. "I think he was satisfied with the outfit we decided on though, in the end."
He kept his mind firmly focused in the present, not wanting his thoughts to turn to the attraction he had felt for the Headwoman's husband.

"Good. He's a master crafter and there are situations when he needs to look like one too. Nobody cares what he wears when he's chasing herdbeasts around, but he does need to look respectable during Gathers and marketdays."

"I couldn't agree more," Jadorin replied. He realized he needed to be heading back to the workshop. He had some work to do before the apprentices returned. "Thank you for meeting with me, Headwoman.
Just send someone over if you do find some extra old clothes."

"I will, Jadorin," Zelanka promised.
