Description: Jadorin meets with Master Mornac to discuss the commission for the Vintner Hall
Location: Amber Hills Hold
Date: month 8, day 20 of Turn 4
Jadorin had not slept well the night before. In his mind, he had kept going over the people he needed to talk to and the steps he needed to take in order to complete the commission for the tapestry Hallmaster Causton had given him the night before. Swirling among the multitude of thoughts were doubts that he couldn't do this project justice; that he should have referred the Hallmaster to one of the Masters at the Weaver Hall; that he should have at least waited and spoken to Master Mornac here at the Hold before accepting the commission. What if he completed the tapestry but it didn't turn out as the Hallmaster had hoped? What if he made a mistake in the middle of the project and had to start over again?
Tini picked up on his agitation and, several times, Jadorin needed to calm the little green down so she wouldn't wake anyone else up. Cloud wasn't affected at all and remained a grey ball of fur pressed against his legs throughout the night. The feline only woke up when he moved, and then it was just to give him a look of annoyance before she quickly went back to sleep again.
Finally, morning came and he allowed himself to get up, knowing he would not be able to sleep any longer. After grabbing some food, he walked over to the workshop to meet with Master Mornac. Hopefully, he would know what to do.
The Master was already in his workroom, a stack of hides on his desk. At the sound of Jadorin's boots, he looked up and smiled, pushing the hides to the side. "Good morning Jadorin." Seeing the tired expression on the Journeyman's face, he asked, "Something wrong?"
"No, not wrong. Actually, very exciting, I think," Jadorin replied, taking a seat. "Yesterday evening, after everyone else had already left, Hallmaster Causton came by with a commission for me."
Mornac's eyebrows rose. "A private commission, or one for the Vintner Hall?"
"A huge tapestry, to be hung in the entry area of the Hall." He placed the sketch given to him by Causton on the other man's desk. The tiredness left his face as he spoke, but worry still remained. "I'll need a lot of help with this, especially with the preparation. Among other things, the Hallmaster wants me to take a trip to the old Vintner Hall to survey the damage."
The Master did not speak for a minute as he gazed at the hide, making Jadorin worry that he would tell him to give the commission to someone else. Finally, he looked up, his blue eyes meeting Jadorin's. "This is wonderful! I think you will be well on your way to a promotion to Master if you can pull this off." He smiled, and Jadorin found himself grinning as he had the night before when Causton had proposed the project to him.
"That has crossed my mind too. But, do you really think I can do it?" Jadorin couldn't help but ask.
"Not by yourself, but there's Junior Journeyman Ranic who is interested in specializing in tapestries, and he is a better artist than you are so he could help with the sketches. And then there are Masters Tobel and Riztan at the Weaver Hall who know just about everything there is to know about tapestries.
Jadorin nodded, as he had been thinking the same thing. I was thinking of sending Master Tobel a letter today, asking if I can go visit for several days. I think that visits to the Hall will be fairly frequent over the next Turn.
They both smiled. Mornac looked down at the sketch again. "Now, tell me more about this project…"
