Cinale

Cinale

"You know, my mother used to always make me peel the tubers too," the Hallsecond said as he picked up the knife in one hand and another tuber in a large meaty paw. "She didn't mind cooking them. It was the peeling of them she despised."

"Oh, the joys of tubers," Cinale laughed. "I don't mind so much, actually...since I don't have to do it often. My girls do the dirty work for me at the Hall," she grinned. "Having the status of head cook comes in handy sometimes."

"Aye, so does being married to the head cook, beauty," Daigoro grinned impishly as he set in to peeling.

"Of course. You get perks others can only _dream_ of."

He smiled almost boyishly as he thought of how much his own tastes had seemed to have influenced the Hall's menu of late. "Especially on restdays when I get you all to myself."

Chuckling, she picked up another tuber. "If I'm not careful, you may get spoiled." Not that he wasn't already, she thought with an affectionate grin. "Oh, you didn't tell me how your guests liked the bread I sent along." She glanced at him, expression worried. "They _did_ like it, didn't they?" Cinale had been experimenting with bread for some sevendays until she was satisfied with her new creation: a type of sweetbread, with bits of nuts and raisins added for texture. It was certainly much sweeter than her other breads, the raisins added to that.
It was very thick and rich, decadent with flavor. But just because she liked it didn't mean everyone would.

"Oh yes, they loved it. In fact, Rivawil asked if he couldn't get the recipe from you. His Batma hasn't done any baking of late, but after the baby comes..." Daigoro's voice trailed off slightly as he remembered the conversation he and his journeyman friend had shared while eating that same tasty treat.

Cinale's face lit up. "Baby? That's wonderful news! When is she due?"

"Any time now, love. That's why Rivawil couldn't stay the evening with us. He had to get back to the Woodsmith Hall." Her husband suddenly became very intent on the tuber in his hand. "It's funny to think that they were married over a month after ourselves and soon will have a little one in their cot."

She hesitated, then looked over at him. "They're lucky."

"They are." **Just lucky.** "We'll be lucky soon," he said, giving her a smile with more reassurance than he felt.

Slowly she set the knife down on the counter, fingers curling tightly around the tuber in her hand. Cinale knew him well enough to see past his forced reassurance. Shards, she wished he wouldn't. Her expression was sad when she turned her face fully to his. "It's been a long time, hon."

"Oh, now," Daigoro said gently, setting down his knife and tuber and reaching for her hand. "Come here, my lovely."

Cinale nestled against him. "I'm sorry, love," she whispered.

"And just what have you to ever be sorry for?" he murmured, wrapping his large arms around the woman in his lap. "I know how much you want a baby. And I do too." She looked down, placing a forlorn hand on her stomach. "You know I do."

His fingers intertwined with hers. Her hand looked so small compared to his own. "And you will. _We_ will. Soon. Sometimes these things just don't happen right away. There's no hurrying it."

How much longer could they tell themselves that? "I know," she murmured, blue eyes flicking to his.

"These things take time," Daigoro said, cradling her cheek gently, looking deeply into her eye. "And for now, I am happy to spend these days having you all to myself. This time is precious, you know. When the baby comes..."

A small grin curved her lips. "He'll need all my attention. Well, most of it."

"_Both_ of our attentions, beauty," he smiled, wrapping his hands around her waist once more and squeezing her close. "Although certainly not all."

Cinale smiled back, her previous anxiety fading to the back of her mind.
"Mmmm... There will still be some left over for you." She pressed her forehead to his, nuzzling him. "And for me, I'm sure."

He smiled, feeling his heart pounding a bit harder in his chest. "Of course, you know, that doesn't mean we should stop _trying_..." Daigoro murmured suggestively.

A warm expression lit her face as she drew back to look at him. "Of course not," she murmured back, sliding a hand up the side of his face to run her fingers through his thick, silvering hair, blushing as her eyes met his again. "I know that."

He practically purred as she ran her fingers through his hair. "You know... I'm not hungry just yet..."

"Maybe you are....just not for food?"

"Oh, you are a rare beauty," Daigoro grinned as he leaned in to kiss her soundly. He could wait for children. After all, the trying was so much fun!
