Briata

Briata

"Ah, there he is." Bridinar indicated a gentleman standing at a table.
He was younger than Bridinar, not bad looking, but his face had an expression of intense concentration that Briata wondered if that was a permanent fixture. She and her father made their way over to the table and Bridinar offered his hand to the Steward. "Penryn, it is good to see you again." He turned to Briata who smiled in greeting. "This is my daugher, Briata. She's come to visit with me."

The Steward's face softened a bit as he smiled a welcome to the young woman. "Well met, Briata. Welcome to Garnet Valley."

"Thank you." Briata decided not to mention that she had been there twice before, they had just never been introduced. "It's a pleasure to meet you sir."

"Briata will probably be accompanying me more often on my trips here."
Bridinar revealed as he helped Briata into a seat and then lowered himself into one.

"Oh? Well, you are welcome." Interesting. Penryn wondered if a match was in the works, or if they had some other particular tie to the Hold.
"I hope you will have a chance to see all that Garnet Valley has to offer."

"Oh it's quite lovely." Briata offered by way of compliment. "I've met several nice people - including Lord Ishek. We had a very pleasant conversation."

"Lord Ishek?" Brindar set his gaze back upon his daughter. "You didn't tell me about that."

Briata blushed a little. "Sorry Papa. You were calling me and when I returned, you were so busy with dealing with the tithe I didn't want to interrupt you."

"Lord Ishek enjoys meeting visitors to his Hold," Penryn assured her father, in case he might think that she had been somehow a bother to the Warder.

"Oh we had a lovely conversation." Well, all except for the last part, but that hadn't been his fault, nor hers. He had simply been trying to warn her an keep her safe. "I also had the pleasure of meeting Lord Ishek's assistant. He was rather nice too." He had been funny as well, playing along with her. It was obvious he had a sense of humour.

"My, you've been a busy little Briata today, haven't you?" Bridinar commented, his smile one of amusement.

"I'm surprised you didn't meet Lady Thalia as well." The Steward couldn't help the faint glimmer of selfish hope that Kiomo was the object of their interest in Garnet Valley. Thalia must marry again, but Penryn secretly hated the idea of seeing her with Kiomo. Of seeing him make her smile and laugh, making her happy... "Shall we eat? I'm sure you must both be hungry after your long day."

"I have not had the pleasure of meeting Lady Thalia." Briata wondered what she was like. She had never met a Lord before Ishek, and never a Lady either. "Yes, please, let's eat." Bridinar stated with unvieled enthusiasm.
"I'm afraid I forgot to even partake in lunch." "You always get distracted and forget to eat." Briata admonished her father gently. "You should take better care of yourself. I'm not always going to be around to remind you, and Wenina wasn't here to do so either."

"Alas, you will not. I don't know what I'm going to do without you."

"Well, at least you have Wenina." "Ah yes, I have her. I would be lost if I didn't have her." Bridinar smiled to Penryn. "My wife." "Ah, I see," Penryn smiled as he waved the kitchen drudge to start bringing the soup and bread to the table. "Will you be leaving your father's home soon then, Briata?"

"Probably not." Briata admitted as she smiled to the drudge who brought her a bowl of soup, steam curling up from it. "But I expect I shall marry eventually."

"Of course you shall," Penryn said encouragingly. "Perhaps you will find someone here who might catch your eye. That would certainly be convenient for you, sir."

"Yes, well, I don't plan on picking anyone for her." Bridinar stated with a shake of his head. "She's got her own mind, I'll let her take care of that."

Briata laughed softly. "Indeed. Perhaps I will. What will happen will happen. Do you have any children, Penryn?"

The Steward carefully folded his napkin onto his lap and reached for his soup spoon. "I have a son through my marriage."

"Oh, I see." Briata echoed the Steward and took up her spoon. She sipped carefully at the hot soup, a smile telling that she liked it. "How long have you been married?" Bridinar queried in between bites of his own meal.

Penryn usually didn't talk about his marriage, but it was only natural to talk about such things in polite conversation. "Since the New Turn."

"Congratulations, then, if a bit late." Brindar waved his spoon for a moment before returning it to the soup.

"How old is your son?" Briata inquired, taking more interest in children than other people's wives.

"He's 8 months now," the steward said, feeling much more comfortable talking about his son. "He isn't walking just yet, but he seems to be considering it very hard."

"Oh, that's quite young to be walking, especially for a boy." Briata leaned forward, her interest in the child quite genuine. "Did he start crawling early?"

"Slightly," Penryn nodded. "As I said, he's not walking yet. He's pulling himself up a lot more though, and I think he's starting to appreciate the view from a standing position."

"I bet he's just darling." Briata seemed to forget about her soup at the moment. She wondered how long it would be until she had a family of her own. "What's his name?"

"His name is Bryalen," he replied between bites. "That's a lovely name." Briata commented before taking another bite of her dinner.

"I hope you'll forgive the change of subject," Bridinar interrupted, "But there are some things I'd like to discuss, if you don't mind doing so over dinner."

"Yes, of course. Forgive me." The steward gave the young woman an apologetic smile. Unfortunately this was not meant to be a social meal.
Penryn waited patiently for Bridinar to begin.
