Characters: Mahantan, Marsten
Description: Marsten reports to Mahantan and reveals that Tala has had an examination.
Location: Dolphin Hall
Date: month 9, day 26 of Turn 4
The door was open, but Marsten knocked upon it politely anyway, stopping upon the threshhold. He nodded politely to his master. "Master Mahantan, I have the day's reports for you."
The Master of Apprentices nodded and motioned toward one of the chairs opposite his desk as he continued to write. He finished the paragraph he had been entering in the record, a brief description of the abilities of one of the apprentice dolphineers, the product of an observation made during a routine swim that day.
Setting his pen aside, he smiled at the journeyman. "So Marsten, how goes it? Are the apprentices that I've assigned to work with you doing their job properly?" Well, there are always issues and corrections to be made, but nothing I can't handle." Marsten gave the Master a wide, warm smile. "For the most part, yes."
"Are any showing a particular aptitude for you work? Either human or dolphin?" "A couple on both. There's one boy and a young dolphin I think will make a good team once the time comes." Marsten stroked his cleanshaven chin in thought. "Of course, it will be a while for that yet."
"Such a partnership will need to progress slowly," Mahantan agreed. "I'd like a complete report from you on that and we'll see about giving him more time with you." "Sounds good." Marsten separated the work he had for the master into two stacks. "The ones on the right are the medical reports I've had for this sevenday. The ones on the left are the general Dolphin Hall and apprentice reports for you."
The Master dolphineer nodded and tapped the one stack. "Anything interesting in the medical reports or just the usual?" "We had a couple of women trying to confirm pregnancy." That was normal and very common, at least, for local woman. "I did have one young woman come because she was afraid there might be something wrong with her, but nothing was found. Evidently she hasn't started her monthly cycle."
Mahantan looked up in concern, his conversation with Supaka from a few months back coming to mind. "Someone from the Weyr or one of the cots nearby?" "Someone from here, actually - one of the apprentices." Marsten leaned forward and took back the stack he had placed before the master. He thumbed through and found the one he was looking for. "Ah, Tala."
He nodded. "Her correct name is Hantala, but she goes most often by Tala." He smiled, though the expression did not reach his eyes. "She's my daughter." "Ah, I didn't realise, sir." Marsten placed the stack back upon the desk, Tala's report on top. "Well, you'll be glad to know that everything looks fine."
"That is good news," the older dolphineer remarked. "Will she need to be seen by a healer again?" "Not unless she feels there is cause for concern." Marsten shrugged. "I'm not a healer, though, so I can't say for certain."
"I understand." Mahantan tapped the desk thoughtfully. "I'll read over the reports and call for you if I have any questions." "Certainly. Marsten stood and nodded politely to the Master, then
turned and headed out.
