Someting in common

Writers: Emma, Paula
Date Posted: 13th June 2008

Characters: Eilomar, Thanja
Description: Eilomar and Thanja discover that they have something in common.
Location: Harper Hall
Date: month 10, day 8 of Turn 4

"It's good to see you about today," Thanja said by way of greeting to the Master Harper as she saw him leaving the classroom. "How did you class go?"

Eilomar snorted dismissively: "It was pathetic. There aren't any proper singers in that particular class."

"None with any potential?"

"Some may turn all right, if they concentrate to the training, instead of making cheeky remarks," Eilomar replied with a shrug.

Youngsters were like that, thought Thanja as she listened to the Master Harper. However he should be able to deal with it by now. "Have you tried splitting them up?"

"Oh, I know how to silence the wise-crackes, no fear," the master singer replied with self-confidence.

"I'm sure you do," she said. "After all, you've been teaching apprentices for turns."

"Yes, I have," he said with slightly patronizing tone. "And I've trained some of the Pern's best singers."

"And you will do for turns to come no doubt."

"Yes, I intend to. However, for some reason, the greatest talents seem to pursue other careers. For instant, there's candidate at the weyr with most promising voice and young dragonrider, who I've tried to convince to continue harper studies." He gave out a theatherical, long suffering sigh.

"Maybe the candidate won't impress, and you never know with dragonriders, they can change their minds at the drop of a hat."

"So true," Eilomar replied. "Did you know I have dragonrider's in my family?" he asked. He didn't know why he told her that, but perhaps he was gradually starting to accept her and other female crafter's as a permanent part of the hall's life now on.

"Myself also," she replied. "Two of my children impressed," a smile crossed her face. "They're at River Bluff."

"Really? Then we have something in common. My daughter is rider at the Dragonsfall weyr," he said. Of course, Aileyan wasn't really his daughter, not by blood, but he found difficult to admit it. It was easier to keep thinking her as a daughter. Otherwise he would have to face the truth of how long back exactly his, now ex-wife's, unfaithfullness reached. "And I have brother who rides a blue," he continued.

"My son is a bluerider, my daughter rides green," explained Thanja. "I can't stop hoping one of them might transfer nearer here though."

"Scattered around Pern by life? I know how that feels. My daughters live both far away," Eilomar said.

"But maybe one day soon your brother could take you to see them."

"Truth to be told, I really don't get along with my brother. Last time I talked with him was at Eilowyn's wedding," Eilomar replied.

"Well maybe your greenrider daughter will come and see you soon."

"She just might. After all she came with her sister to see me when I was ill."

"If only mine would visit a little more often," Thanja mused. But she knew they were busy and had their own lives now.

Eilomar gave her an understanding look. "They have their own lives."

"They do, that they do."
