"Oh you lovely, lovely woman," Daigoro grinned as he spied the beautifully decorated cake in the middle of the kitchen table. The Hallsecond often came home to find his wife had left him some tasty treat to brighten his day. Being married to the cook certainly had it's advantages! She even left a knife next to it for him and everything! He pulled down a plate and fished a fork from the drawer and proceeded to dig into the delectable treat.
He was well into half of the thick slice when Cinale, with Fey perched on her shoulder, came into the room. The cook's eyes widened in dismay at the sight and she rushed toward him, wincing as her firelizard's talons pricked her shoulder. "Daigoro! What are you doing?!"
The Hallsecond paused, the fork half way to his mouth with another large bite. "I'm... eating cake?"
"No....." she moaned, staring numbly down at what had been a painstakingly beautiful piece of cuisine artwork. "Shards you should have asked me!" Fey unfurled her green wings, chittering angrily down at Daigoro, echoing her mistress's scolding tone. "That cake was for _tomorrow_!"
Having displeased Cinale was bad enough, but the scolding green just made it worse. "But... It was here on the table..." Seriously, how was he to know?
Scowling, Cinale stalked over to the cabinets, opened one, and began taking out her baking bowls and spoons. Fey took to the air with an indignant squawk as the cook slammed the crockery down on the counter. "Not everything I bake is for you, Daigoro. You should have asked me. Now I have to bake a whole new cake!" And shards, was she tired! It had been such a long day, and here she thought she could come home and just sprawl on the sofa for a while before reheating yesterday's leftovers for dinner. Shards and shells! Well, if she had told him that she was baking a cake for some special occasion he would never had touched it! "You don't have to bake a new cake. I didn't eat the whole thing. There's still plenty left. If you cut it up before hand no one will know the difference."
She turned around to stare at him in disbelief. "Cut up the cake?" The very idea was scandalous! "Do you have _any_ idea how cheap that will look if I do?" The Hallsecond felt like he was suddenly the lowliest apprentice being scolded by a Master for the most ridiculous notion he had ever heard of.
It was more than a little insulting to his pride. "I was just trying to help you! I don't care what you do with the sharding cake anymore! And rest assured, I won't be eating any more of your precious cake or anything else you put on the table until I have your express permission to do so!" He pushed the chair back, the wood scraping against the floor in protest.
"Well good!" she snarled back, tears of frustration stinging her eyes as she whirled around, reaching blindly for the flour. "Fine!" he growled, picking up the plate with the half eaten piece. Daigoro violently scrapped the offending piece into the garbage, his appetite for anything sweet completely ruined. He yanked the faucet on and began running the water over it. "How was I supposed to sharding know, huh?"
Her jaw clenched as she watched him. "I know, I know. It's all my sharding fault. _I_ should've been more clear. Well from now on I will be!" Sharding inconsiderate man! He hadn't even apologized! Cinale dumped flour into the bowl, reached for the sugar, but her hand missed and her abrupt movements caused the sugar bowl to crash to the floor. She gazed down at it, tears blurring her vision until the colors of the broken crockery melded together, creating an ugly, muted color--the color of this whole, ugly situation. He frowned down at the mess as he wiped the plate dry. Just what they needed at that moment. "Keep making your cake. I'll clean it up."
Pressing the heels of her hands to her eyes, she shook her head. "I'll do it."
"I'll do it," he said a bit more gently. "You just do what you need to do."
Taking her hands away from her face, she looked up at him.
Shards that look made him feel like the most wretched creature on Pern. He hadn't done it on purpose. If he had known that cake was meant for another purpose, of course he wouldn't have touched it. For Faranth's sake, he wasn't that much of a glutton. He lowered his eyes, feeling about as small as a grub. "I'll get the broom."
"Okay," she whispered. Turning back to the counter so she wouldn't have to look him in the eye, Cinale wiped her cheeks on her shoulder and continued to ready her ingredients, ignoring the querying chirps of a concerned Fey who was perched in the rafters with Wort. Shards, she should have taken that moment to apologize to him. He hadn't known. She should have sharding covered the cake, or should have left a note or _something_. She hadn't meant to lose her temper.
He bent down and began picking large pieces of crockery out of the mess.
That sugar bowl would have to be replaced as well as the sugar. He heard her sniff quietly as she kept her back turned to him and he frowned once more. If he had known, he wouldn't have touched it. There was nothing to tell him that this particular cake had been left for a specific purpose. Who was to blame here? It didn't really matter. Daigoro had made Cinale upset, and it didn't matter whose fault it was, the result was the same. He felt miserable. With a sigh he dumped the wasted sugar into the trash. "I'll be back in a bit."
