Description: Fielton comes up with a brilliant plan to convince Miryene to move on with her life. Daigoro, however, is not so sure it's a good idea.
Location: Vintner Hall
Date: month 8, day 21 of Turn 3
"There has been no sign of Jhonnel reported by either Hall, Hold or Weyr,"
the Hallsecond reported, running frustrated fingers through his hair.
Fielton blew out a breath and settled back in his chair grumpily. "I wouldn't care a whit that he was missing if he hadn't left a pregnant wife behind. How is she supposed to move on with her life?"
"I don't know," Daigoro shrugged in frustration as he flopped into the chair across from the Hallmaster. "I don't know if Miryene would even agree to a divorce, but it would be the best thing for her."
"I know..." Fielton sighed. "I wish I could find some proof that Jhonnel's not coming back. I'm half tempted to make some up, just to get it over with."
Daigoro gave Fielton a stern look. "You can't be serious."
Fielton looked at Daigoro for a moment and then shook his head. "No, of course not. Of course not." It didn't sound very sincere, though. His Second regarded him for a moment. It was beneath his dignity and sense of honor to lie to a woman like that. And yet, Miryene could get on with her life if she believed... **_No,** he shook his head. No, he would not lie to a woman who already had enough pain in her life. "Maybe we are not searching hard enough. How can a man so addicted stay away from a source of alcohol. There _has_ to have been some sign of him _somewhere_..."
"For all we know, he really _is_ dead," Fielton replied grumpily. "If we could just convince her..." The Hallmaster's eyes narrowed in thought as he trailed off, obviously having thought of something.
"But we don't _know_ that for sure Fielton." The Hallsecond was beginning to see the Master's wheels turn and he didn't much like the idea.
"No, no..." Fielton suddenly smiled. "Do you remember Ivenn? Losing him to Dolphin Cove was a pity... he _was_ a good Vintner." "Miryene's _first_ husband?" What could the Hallmaster be _thinking_?
"Yes, yes!" At Daigoro's look, Fielton shook his head. "No, hear me out.
Ivenn is a good man, even you _must_ agree with me there!"
"Yes, Ivenn was always a good man..." Though Daigoro didn't like the fact that he left Miryene, he could understand he had thought it was best at the time.
"He still asks about her every time I talk to him, you know..." Fielton's eyes were alight with enthusiasm. "Maybe he might be able to do what we can't, Daigoro. He could help her." Unspoken was Fielton's obvious delight in the perfect solution: remarry Miryene to her first husband, give her baby a father and move on with life. "Hmmm..." Daigoro mulled over his suggestion in his mind. It would be good for her to see that she hadn't made such a big mistake with Ivenn after all... That maybe she could find true happiness with her first love. **And he's a far better choice than leaving her open for that Jio...** The Hallsecond still couldn't forgive the journeyman for hurting Miryene's reputation, not matter how much Cinale and Miryene seemed to like him.
**Going after a married woman like that...**
"She needs someone who can take care of her," Fielton said, smiling broadly.
"And Ivenn is a good man." "Yes, Ivenn is a good man," the Hallsecond finally agreed resignedly. "But would he agree to return from the Weyr?"
"Well, there's one way to find out, isn't there?" There was a hide sitting right at his elbow, and he pulled it in front of him. "I'll just ask him to come for a visit to check on her. We'll see what happens from there." Daigoro nodded. "Are you sure he hasn't... formed any attachments?"
Fielton shrugged one shoulder. "I don't know... it's not a topic he's mentioned, but I imagine if he'd found a new woman to love, he wouldn't keep coming up with excuses to write the Hall and inquire about Miryene." "Yes, I suppose that's so. Will you give her any warning?"
"Do you think I should?" Fielton was already scribbling the first lines of his note. Daigoro considered it a moment. "No. I would not tell her. Why worry about it. She has enough to think about at the moment as it is."
"Mmmm." Fielton added a few more lines and then looked up at Daigoro. "How was she last time you visited her? Any better?" He shook his head sadly. "No better. Still hurt, but still hopeful."
"Well, then..." A pause as Fielton scrawled another sentence in his messy handwriting. "Maybe Ivenn can take care of that." "Hmmm... Maybe." Though something in Daigoro told him that they could just serve to confuse things more - bringing back her ex-husband when her current was missing? He would hope for the best, but not bet on it.
