Zathris

Zathris

Zathris made the short trek from the main Hold to the weaver's workshop, his long strides carrying him quickly. The sound of ovines greeted him just before he let himself inside and made his way to the first weaver he saw. After a couple of short conversations, his feet carried him through the hallways where he stopped at a particular room.

The assistant steward found the man bent over a loom, working on what looked to be a rather large tapestry that would surely be magnificent when finished. Zathris paused to watch the man before closing the distance between them and speaking, "Jadorin?"

"Yes?" the weaver responded, quickly finishing one repetition of the pattern he was making before looking up. "How can I help you?"

"You were recommended to me." Zathris let his eye wander back over to the tapestry in progress. "I'd like to have a tapestry made for my wife."

Curiosity about who had recommended him was almost immediately overwhelmed by delight at the word "tapestry." His eyes lit up, although a small part of his mind cautioned him that it would be impossible to take on any large commissions until he had finished the tapestry for the Vintner Hall.

He stood and shook the man's hand, double checking the knots on his shoulder. "You're Zathris, correct?" At the assistant steward's nod, he walked over to his desk and took a seat, offering Zathris another chair.
"What kind of tapestry do you have in mind? I'm not able to take on any huge projects right now, but I can always refer you to one of the other Journeymen." He jealously hoped this would not be necessary.

"Actually, there's plenty of time. I won't need it until after Turn's Beginning." Zathris assured him, lowering himself into the seat. "I'd like a wall hanging. My wife's birthday is in the second month and she's been stating that she wants something to decorate a rather bare wall. I'm hoping to stall her until her birthday."

"Wonderful. I should be able to work that into my schedule. How big would you like the tapestry to be, and what should it depict?"

"Let's see...something about...this..." Zathris held his hands out wide, then shifted them to show the length. "By this. I'd like it to depict the Hold."

Jadorin nodded, scribbling down approximate measurements. "Does she have a favorite season? Favorite buildings, or trees?"

"Springtime." Yes, when the flowers were blooming and the breeze tickled all those who would venture forth, Benani seemed thrive in those days. "And just of the main Hold, I think, with the garden."

"Main Hold, with the garden," Jadorin repeated to himself as he wrote.
This was a popular image, and a very nice one as well. "Are there any other specifics I should write down?"

"Nothing I can think of." Zathris rubbed his chin, trying to go over the scene in his mind. "No, I think that should do just fine. I appreciate you taking this on for me."

"If I could, I would spend every day working on a tapestry. This will truly be a pleasure to create." The Journeyman was smiling in delight, eager to get started. "I will spend the next sevenday or so making a number of sketches. Then, we can meet again so you can choose how exactly you want the image to look. How does that sound?"

"That sounds great, and I'm glad to hear that you enjoy making tapestries."
After all, if Jadorin didn't at least like doing that, Zathris would have been concerned about the quality of the final product. "Just send word for me when you're done."

He nodded. "I will." He stood and shook the assistant steward's hand, smiling. "You'll hear from me soon. I'll start sketching this afternoon."

"Great. Thank you Jadorin." Zathris returned the shake and clapped the weaver on his arm before turning and heading out. He could just imagine Benani's face once she received her gift.
