Zathris

Zathris

"Come in!" Zathris wasn't necessarily a boisterous speaker, but his
voice carried itself quite well without any help. His low baritone
seemed to ring through rooms even at a whisper. To call someone in
after they have knocked upon the door seemed to make the very air hum
with his timbre. He looked up as the door opened and his face cracked
into a smile. "Ah, Jadorin! Good to see you again!"

Jadorin smiled as he entered carrying several sketches he had
made of the tapestry commissioned by the Assistant Steward. "Hi
Zathris. Is this a good time for you to meet?" He didn't seem to be
busy, but Jadorin didn't want to interrupt important business.

"Oh sure, sure." Zathris stood and motioned to one of the two chairs
that were set before his desk. "You caught me in a lull, so it is
definitely a good time."

"Wonderful." Jadorin took a seat and laid out the sketches on the
desk. He knew Zathris was a busy man, and so wanted this meeting to
be fast and efficient. "Here are three ideas I came up with. I'd
like to know what you think; and, of course, I can combine features
from all three, if you want."

The sketches all showed the Main Hold and the blooming garden, however
they differed in the details. One had a border of vines and flowers
and focused more on the garden than on the Hold buildings. The second
was a very detailed depiction of both garden and Hold, and the third
was a more general image made with broad strokes. The use of colors
varied between the pictures as well, with vibrant colors present in
the first two samples and subdued tones in the third.

Zathris peered over the sketches, looking at one, then the second, then
the third and going back and forth between them. Finally, he picked
one out. "I think I like this second one the best, and I think it has
a nice balance in content and shading."

Jadorin nodded. "Is there anything you would like me to add or change?
The colors can be changed a bit, or if she likes firelizards, or
perhaps felines, I could put one in."

"Oh, felines would be good." Zathris nodded, then grinned. "And
firelizards. She likes both. She likes animals pretty much as long as
she doesn't have to clean up after them."

Jadorin smiled, thinking of his own feline and firelizard. "Does she
have any of her own?" he asked, wondering what colors to use for the
animals.

"No, she doesn't." Zathris shook his head then gave the weaver a
lopsided smile. "Well, no firelizards anyway. She has a cat, though.
A tabby. Perhaps I should get her a firelizard egg."

"Keep that in mind for her birthingday present next Turn," Jadorin said
with a smile.

"Yes, I certainly will." Or, perhaps a present in honour of their turns
together next time their anniversary came around. "You've done a
wonderful job, Jadorin. Will you show me the revised sketch when
you've finished it?"

"Of course. I should have it done within a few days. Should I come by your
office then, or would you like to set a firm appointment now?"

"It might be best to make an appointment." Zathris stated after a
moment. "I'm not always here, and when I am, it's sometimes because I
am conducting business with someone else and can't necessarily be
interrupted."

"All right. How about in three days? Would you be able to meet in
the morning? I need to supervise some apprentices in the afternoon."

Zathris took up a bit of parchment and glanced over the notes he had
made regarding his schedule for the sevenday. "Yes, that will work
fine if you don't mind making it early. Perhaps around the eight
candlemark?"

Jadorin thought for a moment before responding, quickly reviewing his
other projects in his mind to make sure he would have enough time to
finish the sketch before their meeting. "Yes, that would be fine. I
look forward to it."
