Figol waited for Jestyn to catch up with him before heading down to the beach, he'd planned on being alone, but he didn't really mind his friend tagging along. "How's it going?"
"I sometimes wonder why I ever decided to be a harper." Jestyn muttered as he drew alongside Figol." He shuffled the sand with his feet for a moment, then began to walk in the direction his friend had been going prior to calling out to him. "It's going busy. Too busy. I'm tired of studying."
The senior apprentice smiled, it was a thought he had every day... but usually only during the subjects he didn't like, he could play gitar and work on his compositions all day. "You're doing Charter Law right now aren't you? It's a tough one."
"Tell me about it." Jestyn groaned mightily and lifted his hands to his face to rub at it. "I swear I don't want to ever hear another word about it for as long as I live."
"Well, you could always stand for another hatching." Figol teased. Jesten had stood at the last two hatchings, and while Figol didn't see the appeal at being a dragonrider himself, he did have a lot of respect for those that did. "With that flight a few days ago, it shouldn't be too long before there are eggs on the sands again."
"Oh I plan on it." Jestyn grinned broadly. Oh to be a rider! To have a lifemate! Jestyn knew he was going to impress, just _knew_ it and he couldn't wait. "Do you think you'll impress this time around?"
Figol laughed, "Nice try Jestyn. I said it last time and I'll repeat again, I'm not going to petition to Stand. I can barely take care of myself, let alone a dragon."
"Come _on_ Figol. It changes once you impress. A dragon would set you straight!" Jestyn punched his friend lightly in the arm. "Besides, I can't Stand alone!"
"I'm sure somehow you'll manage. Besides, if I Impress I can't sing your battle songs all across Pern." he explained then eyed him slyly as he busted out into tune. "Jestyn battles mighty Thread, on his ever faithful _green_..."
Figol received a kick for that. "Shut up! If anyone impresses a green, it's going to be _you_. And you could _still_ sing songs about me. You could be a Weyrharper!"
He didn't retaliate, he knew he deserved it, but it had been worth it. "You've got to be realistic Jestyn. Maybe in a interval you could have kept up your studies, but if you Impress, you'll never make journeyman. And that means you could never make Weyrharper."
"I don't know about that." Jestyn kicked at the sand as he walked. "You can do anything if you put your mind to it. Except Charter Law."
"Charter Law isn't so bad, you only have to do it once." he reasoned, then teased, "Of course, they might decide you need it a second time just to get it through your thick skull!"
"Gah, no!" Horror crossed over Jestyn's face and he picked up his speed. "I'll take my chances with Threadfall dragonless before I do that!"
Figol almost choked in his laughter, "Wow, you really _do_ hate Charter Law! Come on, let's not worry about it for a bit and go swimming."
"I'm not going to argue with that!" Then without warning, Jestyn sprinted ahead, silently challenging his friend to a race, his laughter echoing behind him.
