"Have you decided where you would like to spend Turns End, yet?" Luter asked, as he entered the dining area. He glanced across to Alia at the stove, before taking a seat. "We've received an invitation to return to the main Hold to celebrate with them, but I wasn't sure how to reply."
"Oh really?" Alia turned away from where she was cooking to look over at her husband. "That sounds like it could be fun, but what do you think?"
"I didn't know if you'd appreciate the days travel there and back? I was kind of hoping we'd all gather together here and celebrate our first Turns End at the holding." he waved his arm wide, encompassing the other small huts that were not scattered around the area.
Over the last couple of months more people had requested to move to the holding, and Luter had been grateful to the Lord Holder for allowing them too. They now had two farmers as well as the herders who had moved out here with them; added to that there were two more couples who were experienced in equine breeding.
The buildings from the old holding were finally being put to use again, Luter felt he had returned to his home, though he wasn't sure if his family had had any ancestors who had come from this area. He knew he would make a success of this venture, for both his family and for Corowal, providing no misfortune occurred.
"There's also the fact that you've got several mares who will be close to foaling about that time." Alia pointed out as she turned back to the soup she was making and gave it a stir. "To be honest, I'm fine with either option, as long as I'm with you to celebrate it."
"Then I will reply thanking Corowal for his invitation but politely declining." he smiled, "Thank you for being so amenable, but this means you will have more work on your shoulders. Though it will be shared around the hold.' "More work on me?" Alia clicked her tongue and wagged her spoon at Luter in a silent, amused reprimand. "My dear, my dear, that will never do. You shall be punished."
He laughed as he moved towards her, his arms snaking around her waist. "You don't mind?"
"Of course I mind." Alia sniffed and pulled away from his embrace. "I told you that you shall be punished." She turned the spoon so that the tip of the handle tapped against his nose.
"Okay, I'll accept the punishment. But you will have some help, the other women ..." he said, offering their services.
"As long as I get to punish you." Alia laughed and then pushed at Luter. "Come on, you're crowding me against the stove and it's hot enough over here already!"
"Oh okay. Why is it you're always trying to avoid me, woman?" he laughed, but took a seat at the table. "I've been thinking..." he mused to her.
"That's a dangerous past time!" Alia exclaimed as she took the pot off of the heat and let it sit to cool for a moment. If eaten right then, tongues would get singed.
"With me out and about travelling more, we need a quick way of communicating..." he had seen flits around the Hold, they were becoming more common between the normal folk these days, and having one would be useful - he just had to convince Alia.
"We could always get big drums." Alia suggested faceciously. "We would just have to learn the system."
"I was thinking more of a flit?" he said turning around to face her. "As well you know."
"But playing the drums could be fun!" Alia moved her arms as if she were beating a large drum, the spoon being used as a stick. "And I'd get to make lots of noise. It would drown out the noise of the children."
He shook his head at her. "No one would think you were a healer, unless a mind healer, they always seem to be a little doo lal tap." he said tapping the side of his head. "I was thinking of sending out queries for flit eggs, and getting one if it were possible."
"Are you saying I'm not all there!" Alia leveled the spoon at her husband. "Don't make me thwap you with this. I'm dangerous with a spoon." She put it down then and replied in a more serious manner. "It's up to you dear. I won't stop you from getting a firelizard."
"It was actually one each, if I can afford the price they'll be asking. So that we can be in communication. It would be too much to hope to get a queen and a bronze, but imagine if that happened, we'd be able to add them to the earnings we would have." His mind ticked over, he would have to ask around and see if anyone in the area had flit eggs available.
"Wouldn't one be enough?" Alia raised eyebrows at the idea of having two. "And how much do they cost?"
"I'm looking to the future, don't you consider it would be an investment? I'm sure Corowal would look well on us if our tithe increased with the earnings from a nest."
"I suppose, though there's really no guarantee what we'll get even if we do purchase eggs." Alia began setting out the dishes for the evening meal as she talked, the clunk of plates harmonizing their conversation. "And, again, how much do they cost? Are they worth the expense?"
"Well it won't hurt to at least enquire - will it?" he asked, already decided on the idea. He had heard that there were always clutches around the Hold, he would just have to ask around each time he went up there. Even if he had to wait between the first and second egg.
"No, I suppose not." Alia still wasn't entirely convinced. She could see the use in a firelizard, but she wasn't sure it warranted parting with hard earned marks. Not to mention one seemed to be plenty.
"Then its settled - on both counts. We're here for Turns End, and I shall start enquiring about firelizards." he nodded affirmatively, not really to Alia, more to himself, confirming his own plans.
