The rumble of the sea mixed plesantly with the high sound of the pipes
that Lirit was playing. He dipped low, then high, as if trying to get
the tune to chase the waves as they rushed in and out. Lirit tilted
his head as he heard Taia moved and wondered if she was still
overstuffed from their picnic. He was, though he had urged himself to
sit up and play the pipes to break the silence. Not that the silence
was uncomfortable, but he was a harper. Why have silence when one
could have music?

"That sounds lovely..." Taia mused. Her hand caressed Sharp's fur
where the canine lay beside her. She couldn't touch Scout, but she
knew he lay close to Lirit's side. It had been a pleasant afternoon,
and now was lovely - relaxing, just sitting here and listening to
Lirit's playing.

The harper paused in his playing. "Thank you, thank you kind lady. A
harper is always glad to know his music is appreciated." He laughed,
then and gently tapped the pipe against her knee. "Do you think you
can move yet? Or shall we stay here until the dead of night, for I
fear that's how long it will take for my food to digest."

"A little longer?" she asked, "I'm enjoying the peace and quiet out
here, so different to the noise and bustle back at the Weyr." She
stretched her arms wide, embracing the open space that surrounded them
and connected with Lirit's face.

"Hey!" Lirit half complained, half laughed as his hand shot up to rub
his poor smacked nose. "And here I thought I hadn't done anything to
deserve such treatment."

"Oh shaffit, Lirit, I'm so sorry!" Taia reached out her hand again and
felt for his face, "where did I get you?" she asked, moving towards
him, very carefully.

"Right smack dab on the nose." Lirit laughed again and let his hand
drop. "Do you want me to match you? Is that it?"

"I'm sorry, really..." she began before toppling forward, her arms
reaching out to grab anything to steady herself. 'Anything' just
happened to be Lirit.

The harper laughed as Taia fell right into his lap. "You're a mess
today, you know that? I swear, it's like you're out to get me just
because I wasn't kicked in the face by a runner."

"Be grateful it was my hand," she joined in his laughter, "if I was
that determined,She dragged herself up his torso, gaining her balance
as she did. She felt his warm breath on her cheek and turned to say,
"I could have used my foot." But the words caught in her throat as she
brushed her lips against his.

Lirit didn't say anything in return. If Taia could have seen his face,
she would have noted the surprise that ran over it. He didn't react,
wasn't quite sure _how_ to react.

His lips were warm against hers, but there was no reaction from the
Harper, she knew she had stepped over the mark. "I'm sor-" she began
then realised that in truth, she wasn't. "No..." she shook her head,
"no, I'm not sorry." she smiled softly and kissed him again.

The harper was even more surprised the second time. After a moment, he
took her by her arms and pushed her away, though he did not release
his grip on her. "Taia..." So what was he supposed to say to that?

"You..." he really didn't want to kiss her? She thought they had
developed a relationship of sorts. One that would develop, but...he
didn't want to kiss her. She pulled away, "I... I guess I am sorry."
she pushed herself up from the blanker, reaching for Sharp's collar.
"I..." she didn't know how to apologise more than she had, so she
turned away and hoped that Sharp would know which way to go to return
to the Weyr. How could she have gotten it so wrong?

"It's just too fast." He stated, his hand reaching out to take hold of
her once more. "Too fast, too soon."

"Too fast? Too soon?" a nervous laugh broke from her throat. "Lirit,
we've known each other..... for months. I thought..." she shook her
head, "never mind. I'll go."

"Don't." Lirit tightened his hold upon the girl. "Don't go. Sit
down, let's talk about this."

"What is there to talk about?" she asked, "I move too quickly, and
you're not interested. So I made a fool of myself."

"You're not a fool." Lirit insisted as he continued to tug at Taia.
"And I never said I wasn't interested."

Relenting, she turned back to him, "I made such a fool of myself,
Lirit." she said again, "I...I just don't know why I did it." she
slumped back to the ground beside him.

"Well, I must say it's a nice change." His lips spread into a grin and
he leaned toward her. "Usually I'm the one playing the fool."

"Please, don't..." she said, hanging her head.

"Look, Taia, I _like_ you." Lirit got serious again, his smile fading.
"I like you a lot and I think there's the potential for more. But we
need to take things one step at a time instead of rushing head on into
it."

"We're rushing?" she asked, "How can we be rushing, when we've known
each other so long now?"

"I would hardly call two months _that_ long of a time." Lirit stated,
amusement tinging his voice.

"Long enough for a kiss, though, surely?"

"Er...depends on the kind of kiss." Lirit stated slowly, hoping he
didn't offend her.

"I'm sorry... I just... I don't understand." she shook her head, a kiss....
was just a kiss, wasn't it?

"Er..." Lirit honestly wasn't sure what to do. He did like Taia, he wasn't
lying. He liked her a lot, that was the truth. Yet, at the same time, he
didn't want to take things too fast. Relationships were delicate and
rushing into them wasn't usually a good idea. He sighed softly and let his
hand run up her arm to rest upon her shoulder . "I think we just need to
take our time." He said finally, smiling a little and forgetting that she
couldn't see it.

"If you say so..." though she didn't sound so sure. She appreciated the
touch, but wasn't sure if she was expected to respond and decided not to.

"Come on, Taia." Lirit's voice was almost pleading, "Don't be mad. I like
you, otherwise I wouldn't be spending so much of my free time with you, eh?"

"I know." she said quietly, "I just.... You're right, we'll take it slowly."

"Who knows where things will lead?" Lirit stated quietly as he let his hand
fall to his side. "In the meantime, let's just enjoy each other's company,
eh?"

"Okay..." she nodded, forgetting he wouldn't see her. She still felt
hollow at his words, but maybe... Maybe some day soon he would change his
mind, maybe.
