Sorsha checked her bait and then tossed her line into the gently moving water. She'd felt so much better after a good night's sleep, no dreams last night, that she'd been excited at Railen's invitation for some afternoon fishing. It was nice to have time alone with him, it seemed that ever since they'd announced their engagement they'd been apart more an more, not only in preparation for the wedding, but also getting hold matters ready for their absence when they left. "Do we really have the whole rest of the day?"
"The whole day." Railen assured her. He had made certain that everything was arranged. He _had_ taken quite a bit of time with Sorsha lately, though usually it was a couple of hours here and there, mostly during her riding lessons which was also spent teaching some of the little ones in the hold to ride. They had certainly gone fishing a couple of times, and of course a half day on rest days but not since they had told his parents about their desire to wed. However, the entire day on that rest day was set aside to spend time with her, just her. The young man grinned as he leaned against the tree that overlooked the water. "Make sure you don't fall in again."
"You'd rescue me if I did." She assured him. She always felt safe when Railen was near her. He'd never let anything happen to her. "I bet I catch the bigger fish this time."
"I'm sure you will." Railen straightened up and tugged at the line with rod. "No matter how hard I try. I suppose I shall simply have to admit you're actually better than me at something."
Sorsha chucked and leaned against her fiance, "Well I do have things stacked in my favor. Me from a seahold and you landlocked doesn't quite seem fair."
"I'm still better at runners, but at the rate you're learning, you're going to surpass me sooner than later." Railen leaned over to nuzzle her hair and place a kiss upon her head. One hand released the pole and he slipped his arm around Sorsha's shoulders. "Then what will I be good for?"
"For a pillow?" she suggested with a laugh in her voice. She snuggled up against his chest as an example.
"Yeah, I suppose that's about it." Railen chuckled, then stiffened in surprise when the line in his hand grew taught. "I say, I think I've got something!"
Sorsha laughed as they both sat up to take care of the line. "So much for me being better than you at something."
"With my luck, it won't be any bigger than my thumb." Though it was giving a good fight. Railen tried to ease the line in but the fish was tugging back something fierce. "I think it protests my attempts to draw it out."
She inched forward, ready to grab it once it got close to shore, "That just means it'll taste good."
"I would think a larger fish would taste better!" Railen laughed and continued to work the fish in. "Shards, this thing just refuses to budge!"
Sorsha eyed the line for a moment, then reached out and pulled it to one side and then the other. She sighed and sat up, disappointment on her tongue. "It's a rock or a branch or something. And it's stuck. Unless you want to go wading out into the river to dislodge it I think we'll just have to cut the line."
"See? And you thought I was getting good at this." Railen chuckled, drawing his knife from his belt and reaching for the line. "Alas, I shall have to merely be second to you in something. That's not such a bad thing though."
She chuckled as she watched him cut the line and set the pole down. She crawled over to him and started giving his jawline quick little kisses. "I could be your consolation prize if you want."
"Well, I guess I can't really argue about that." Railen grinned, putting away his knife and drawing Sorsha into his embrace. "I suppose there's something to be said about not being good at something."
Sorsha worked her way up to his lips and gave him a long, lingering kiss. She loved his arms around her, she felt so safe and secure, like nothing in the world mattered except the two of them. "We've got all afternoon right?"
"Yeah." Railen stated, a bit breathless from the surprise of the kiss, though he was certainly pleased. "All afternoon."
