Wise advice

Writers: Paula
Date Posted: 5th December 2008

Characters: Alrog, Alfida
Description: Alrog asks his mother's advice.
Location: Garnet Valley Hold
Date: month 13, day 2 of Turn 4

His mother Alfida was spinning wool into a yarn, when Alrog entered the
room where the hold's women worked. She had very tranquil expression for
the humming of the spinning wheel was very soothing voice. Alrog fell into
a chair near her.
"Hello, mom."

"Hello, Alrog-dear. What is bothering you?" Alfida asked calmly.

"What makes me think something is bothering me?"

"Your expression, your body language and the fact you're here middle of a
workday."

"I need your advice, mother," Alrog sighed and stared the spinning wheel.

"About what, dear?" she asked.

"About Fieayz. What should I do with her, should I ask her to marry me?"

"Do you love her?" Alfida asked.

"I don't know," Alrog admitted. "I do like her and enjoy her company. She
makes me laugh. Is that love?"

"Sounds more like friendship. You can do worse than base a marriage on
friendship. You have certainly been seen with her long enough and gone to
rather improper trips with her without chaperone. You haven't gotten her
pregnant, have you?" The last question was asked with suspicious tone.

"For Faranth's sake, mother! I'm not Rorin! We haven't gone past kissing,"
Alrog replied, his face turning red.

Mentioning his brother's name made Alfida's whole body stiffen. He was
some what like a taboo in the family. He got rarely mentioned these days
and never talked about. Like he had never existed.

"Good. But people have started to talk and speculate," Alfida said. "It's
high time you either marry her or broke up with her."

"But would she be good wife for me?" Alrog wondered.

"Well, she is a master crafter's daughter and hallmaster's fosterling. She
has good upbringing and I never heard any bad things about her. Of course,
I don't have the ears in Smithcraft hall that I have in main hold or in
other minor holds," Alfida admitted. "She does have some connection to the
weyr."

"Yes, an uncle, I believe," Alrog said.

"A relative in Weyr can actually be an advantage. I say, marry her," she
said. "Love comes later," she added softly, reminiscently.

"Did you love my father when you got married?" Alrog asked curiously.

"No, actually I didn't. He was my second choice. But the man I did love,
didn't even notice me. So I married his best friend instead, who did
notice me. And I never regretted it. I learned to love him and we were
happy," she sounded sad. Her husband had died eight Turns ago.

Alrog was silent for a long moment, watched his mother's spinning and
thought about Fieayz and how he felt around her. He liked being with her
and the thought of spending rest of his life with her felt pleasant. He
reached to a decision. He was going to ask her to mountain climbing and
propose her. His face broke into a smile.
"Thanks' mom," he said, got up and planted a kiss to her cheek.

"You're welcome, dear. Do make your old mother happy and get me more
grandchildren."
