Characters: Eridhiya, M'galec
Description: Eri and M'galec try to have a quiet evening together
Location: River Bluff Weyr
Date: month 13, day 26 of Turn 4

It had been a fairly light shift today, and Eridhiya had consequently
spent a little more time than usual thinking about non-work-related
subjects. (She refused to call it daydreaming, even to herself.) Turn's
End was nearing, and she wondered what her preferred dinner companion
had planned. Did he participate in the festivities? Did he avoid them,
preferring to find something else? She didn't know, and she was curious.

After work, she headed to the Infirmary and sat in the waiting room. She
waved off the journeywoman who asked if she needed assistance, stating
she was waiting for someone. She didn't mind waiting; she knew M'galec
wasn't expecting her, but she thought it would be nice to surprise him
with a visit.

She did not have to wait long before the bronzerider came striding
through the door speaking to a journeyman over his shoulder. "Make sure
and alert me at once if Brownrider T'nary's condition changes in the
slightest." He almost muttered a 'someone will be with you shortly' to
the lone woman as he passed until the face registered in his mind.
"Eri?" he asked, confusion giving way to concern. "Are you all right?"

"I'm fine." she answered, standing up. "I was off a little early and
thought I'd wait for you."

"Oh, well then." The usually stern healer's lips spread into a smile.
"I am happy to see you. Have you eaten?"

"I haven't yet. I was hoping you might be free."

That pleased M'galec greatly. "Well, I am still on call so I have to be
easily found. Do you want to go down to the dinning hall? Or would you
rather the quiet of my weyr?"

"If you're sure your weyr won't prevent you from being on call, the
quiet would be best."

"If you would be so kind as to inform the kitchens that we need two
meals, I will let the healers on duty know that is where I can be
found."

"I'll meet you at your weyr." she promised, heading off to fetch the
meals.

The bronzerider had just enough time to put on a fresh tunic when she
knocked on the door. He hurried to open it and reached out for the
basket she was carrying. "Allow me."

"Thank you." she said, letting him have it. "There are fresh bubblies
being sent up as well. They had just started a new batch."

"That sounds lovely, thank you," he smiled, setting the basket on the
table and pulling out a chair for her. "Please have a seat while I open
a bottle of wine for you. I regret I will not be able to join you, but
that should not stop you."

She nodded. "How have you been? I haven't seen much of you the last few
sevendays." It had partially been her own fault- embarrassment over her
flight still lingered- and it had partially been differing schedules.
She'd been working several overnights.

"Up to my ears in weyrlings and patients," he smiled, setting an empty
wine glass before her. Pausing at the cupboard he asked, "Red or white
tonight?"

"White, I think." she decided. "So, what's Turn's End like here?"

"Like Turn's End is in most places. There is music and dancing, the
best food, the best clothes, the best of everything..." He sighed as he
pulled the cork from the top. "To tell the truth, I rather enjoy
celebrating the end of the turn in my own way. Not in crowd of drunken
revelers."

"The drunkenness is shameful, but the dancing at the beginning isn't all
bad. And what is your own way?" she inquired.

He sat down with a glass of juice and pondered that question silently a
moment. "I like to go to a beach or a mountain top, somewhere quiet. I
like to ponder the events of the last turn and reflect as I watch the
sun go down on it. And then the next morning I watch as the sun rises
and greet the new turn, thinking of all the possibilities contained in
that moment - a new day and a new turn. That is my way."

"It sounds rather peaceful." she said. "Perhaps we could at least have
dinner that night?"

"I was actually thinking something along those lines," the healer said,
a small smile playing across his lips as he fingered his glass.
"Perhaps a late picnic dinner around sunset?"

"It sounds lovely." she agreed.

"It is a plan then?" he asked, reaching over to lay his hand on hers.

"It is." she agreed, turning her hand up to squeeze his gently.

A loud and hurried knock came from his door, startling the pair out of
their quiet moment. "Journeyman M'galec?"

"Faranth's Egg," the bronzerier sighed reluctantly as he released her
hand and pushed himself back from the table. "Excuse me a moment."

"Sounds like work is calling." the dragonhealer said, regret twinging.
She hoped it wouldn't be serious.

He spoke quietly with the messenger for a moment before hurrying back to
the table. "I am sorry, Eri, but I am needed right away. A brownrider
I performed surgery on earlier has taken a turn for the worse and I must
go back immediately and perform an emergency proceedure. Please feel
free to finish the meal. I regret I will not be able to join you."

"That's fine. I know your job comes first." Had the messenger come for
her, she would have had the same reaction, of course. And while it was
disappointing, she couldn't think of a better reason for him to have to
leave. Any man could have Craft duties, but it took someone special to
save lives like M'galec. "Hopefully we can speak again soon."

"We shall. And again, I am sorry. If there was anyone else..." he said
with a helpless shake of his head. But no, there was no one else at the
Weyr who could
perform this proceedure half as well as he, the bronzerider was sure.
Leaning down he gave her a soft peck on the cheek. "Enjoy the meal."

"I will." she told him, smiling in understanding. "Go save a life."

"I will." One more smile filled with regret and the bronzerider turned
and walked off to do just that.
