Description: Corran and Jadorin speak at the noonday meal.
Location: Amber Hills Hold
Date: month 1, day 13 of Turn 5
Mealtime for a guard wasn't usually with the rest of the Hold. When it
was, Corran tried to sit with new people; he liked learning the names
of as many people as he could. After all, it was his job to protect
them, be responsible for them, so he felt a great interest.
Today he spotted a lone man with weaver's knots, and headed over. "Is
it fine if I join you today?" he asked the taller man.
Jadorin looked up in surprise at the man, who looked familiar but who
he didn't think he'd met before. "Of course," he quickly said,
gesturing to the empty seats around him. Whoever the man was, his
knots showed him to be a guard. A quick flash of fear ran up his
spine. Had he done something wrong? Had someone found out about his
relationship with that male greenrider? But no, that couldn't be. He cleared
his throat and took a small sip of juice, willing himself to stop
worrying. "I'm
Jadorin."
"I'm Corran." Corran said, sitting down. "I hope you don't think I'm
intruding. I like to meet different people, know whose lives I'm
responsible for." he said easily.
Jadorin relaxed a bit. "That sounds like a good idea. Do you know
most of the people in the Hold?" It would be nice to at least
recognize people in the dining hall and around the Hold.
"I'm learning then. I used to know most everyone at Amethyst Cliff.
Now that it and Amber Hills have merged, there's many new faces."
Corran explained.
"Ah. How is it living here now?" He rarely visited his parents, but
at least he knew their home still existed. He couldn't imagine what
it would be like to have lost so much.
"Both of my parents made it through, so I made it out well. But it's
hard knowing I could never go back to the place I grew up. And there
are people I knew who died." He paused. "But Amber Hills has been
welcoming so far." Mostly.
Jadorin took a sip of klah, not sure what to say. What was there to
say in a situation like this? The earthquake had occurred over a Turn
ago, but everyone at the Hold was still feeling the effects of it.
"It must be quite an adjustment," he finally said.
"It was- but at least I have my job and my family." Corran said. Then
he changed the tack. "Where are you from?"
"A cothold beholden to Emerald Falls Hold. My parents and most of my
family are still there. I don't visit as often as I would like to,"
he admitted.
"How'd you wind up halfway across the continent?"
"After walking the tables, I traveled for a number of Turns," he
replied, waving his arm vaguely to indicate the many places he had
been. "I spent most of my time at small Holds. Now, I've been sent
here on a more permanent assignment. The weaver I replaced wanted to
return to the Hall to teach." He shrugged. "So, here I am."
"And you like it here? It must be different from a small Hold."
"There's definitely a lot more going on, especially with the Vintner
Hall and the Tavern nearby. I like it though. I like seeing new
faces almost every day." It was nice that Corran was one less
unfamiliar face. Maybe someday he would recognize everyone.
"So do I." Something he and the other man had in common. "So what's
your specialty? I'm afraid I don't know much about the Weavercraft."
Jadorin smiled. "I can do a bit of everything, but I especially love
weaving tapestries. There's just something about the entire process,
from sketching to choosing colors to weaving." He shrugged. "Many
find it boring, but I think it's wonderful." It felt strange speaking
about weaving to a guard. The work Corran did was so much more
practical than his own job.
"Are any of the ones in the Hold your work? And do you only do the
giant ones or do you do smaller ones for, say, room hangings?"
"I haven't been here long enough to have completed a giant tapestry,
but I was commissioned by the Vintner Hall to do one. It will be a
number of months before it is finished though. I usually do room
hangings. They're must faster to do, and cheaper as well," he said
with a smile. "I'm working on one right now depicting the Hold in the
spring."
"If you don't mind, I'd like to see it when it's done." Corran said
earnestly. "I like looking at art."
"Really?" Jadorin said, a bit taken aback, and pleased. "I'd be happy
to show it to you. I don't know what your schedule is like, but I'll
have it finished by the middle of next sevenday."
"I'd like that." Corran said with a smile. "My brother's a rider, and
he loves to collect things for his Weyr. I wouldn't mind getting him
something, so do you have anything for sale?"
"I don't have much right now, but I can show you what I do have when
you come by. There is a variety of woven cloth that can be made into
clothing, bed linens, table runners, etc. I also have several small
rugs and wall hangings." With all of the recent commissions he had
received, as well as the large tapestry he was working on, there was
little time for other projects.
"I'd like that."
Jadorin smiled. "Well, I need to get back to work. I look forward to
seeing you soon though. It was nice speaking to you." And he meant
it. He was glad that the guard had decided to sit with him.
