Meeting with the harper

Writers: Emma, Paula
Date Posted: 12th February 2009

Characters: Alrog, Fieayz, Carlan
Description: Alrog and Fieayz go to see Carlan to arrange their wedding.
Location: Garnet Valley Hold
Date: month 1, day 17 of Turn 5
Notes: Follows: "Catching up."

"I'm sorry I'm late, I run into an old friend on my way here," Alrog
apologized when he reached the spot were Fieayz waited. They were
going to meet a harper today and settle for the details.

"That's okay," she said, greeting her intended with a smile, then stretching
up for a decorous kiss on the cheek. "I hope it was worth meeting them
again."

"She was the woman who was in charge of fosterlings when I was
fostered here, and she is still doing the same thing," Alrog said.
"Shall we go in?"

"I hope the Harper is here still," she said, lifting her hand to knock on
the door.

"Come!" called out Carlan.

"Journeyman Carlan? I'm holder Alrog and this is Fieayz," Alrog
introduced them when the had entered the room.

"Well met," said the Harper as he cast an eye over the pair. Young, his
knots indicated he led a hold of his own, and hers a fosterling at the near
by Smith Hall. His first supposition was that there was to be a weeding,
would they prove it or not?

"I hope you can help us, Journeyman," said the girl politely. "We want to
get married."

"Yes," Alrog confirmed with a smile.

"I see," Carlan gestured to a couple of seats. "Might I ask when you intend
to have the ceremony?" The girl didn't look as though there was a need to
act in haste, although appearance wasn't always a clue.

Alrog looked Fieayz. "Do you have any preference? Any time is fine
with me, although my mother wants a suitable time to arrange the
feast."

"Early in Month two perhaps?" suggested Fieayz.

"Sounds good to me," Alrog agreed.

"I'll make a note in my diary for then, once you've checked with your
parents you can confirm the date," Carlan said as he made a note.

"My mother won't have anything against it, and my father is dead,"
Alrog said. He glanced Fieayz again. "Have you received a reply from
your father yet?"

"Not yet, I expect to any day now. Arva took a note to Mama at the Weyr, and
she wrote back saying that she approved."

"I don't believe there will be objections," Alrog said to the harper.

"Besides, Hallmaster Daynar has given his permission, and I am under his
care," explained Fieayz.

"I see," Carlan made another note. "And you will have witnesses?"

Alrog made an amused snort. "The whole Iron Lake Hold will be
witnessing. They been waiting for the day since I turned eighteen."

"And for you?" Carlan turned to Fieayz.

"I don't know if Papa will come, but Mama and my Uncle will come from the
Weyr. My sister should come too, and maybe she'll bring my little brother."

Alrog made a mental note for that. The dragons needed room to land.

"Then all we need is a date, once you have your Father's permission." The
Harper gave the young couple a smile. "I'm sure it won't be too long before
you can have the ceremony."

"Good," Alrog said.

"I hope it won't be long before Papa writes back."

Alrog wished the man wasn't dragging his feet deliberately.

"We'll come back to you as soon as we can Journeyman," Fieayz said. "And
I'll bet it'll be in the next day or so."

"Good," Carlan smiled at the pair. "I'll look forward to seeing you then."
