She knew it wasn't much, but the woman held a small wrapped parcel in her hands. It was a small homewarming gift intended for Briata. Hoping it might place some goodwill in her corner, she hurried along the corridors until she came to the Ladies' Sitting Room where she hoped to find her.
"Oh!" Briata nearly ran into the other female as she was exiting the room. Her face relaxed into a smile once both of their balances were caught, however, and she greeted the woman warmly, "Hello Parale."
"Good day dear. I..was hoping to see you. I've a small token.." She thrust the box out, hoping Briata would find favor with it. She'd spent her time on it, though it wasn't anything of craft quality.
"A token? For me?" Briata looked at the box then took it gingerly from Parale's hands. "You didn't have to give me anything. It's not my birthday!"
"Aye well consider it a late wedding gift." She shrugged. Of course Parale had attended the festivities like the other holders, but she hadn't been able to present a gift then.
"It's so sweet of you." Briata carefully opened the box, plucking off the top and peering into it.
Inside the box was a small necklace. It was made of woven fibers, with small stones that had holes bored into them. The overall effect was something simple, but eye-catching. "I know it isn't much but.."
"It's lovely!" Briata gingerly lifted the necklace out of its container and set the box aside. She lay the gift over her hands to admire it. "Where did you find it?"
"I wove the hemp myself, but the pebbles..I get them from the smiths." They weren't as pretty as the glass blown beads some used, but Parale thought they were more serviceable.
"I love it, I really do." Briata's tone was not contrived. She fingered the beads a moment longer before slipping the gift around her neck. "You are so sweet. Thank you Parale."
"Aye you're welcome. Figured it was the least I could do." She shrugged and her headscarf fluttered a bit. "So how is married life agreeing with you?"
"It's..." Should she tell her the truth? No. While Briata liked Parale, she didn't feel comfortable enough to reveal certain details about her life. "It's good. Different than I expected, but that shouldn't be surprising since I've never been married before."
"Oh aye.. I was just hoping you could enlighten us spinsters you know.." She rolled her eyes. "The wedding was certainly a very large affair. Good food by the way. Very important to always have good food on hand." She nodded, her head bobbing a bit, shaking the tail ends of her scarf.
Briata giggled and fingered the necklace where it hung. "I'll keep that in mind."
"Well I just wanted to see that you got this. I suppose you have things to do and all.." Parale really didn't know what else to say, so she smiled then looked pointedly at the exit.
"Yes I do." As much as she liked the company, Briata did, as Parale had said, have things to do. "But perhaps we can have some tea together later?"
"Perhaps if the children don't manage to break anything before then." She tipped her head and gave Briata a passing smile, leaving her to her work as she hurried down the corridor. "Clear skies!"
