Duties Never End

Characters: R'syl, E'rae
Description: E'rae and R'syl talk about possible future hunting excursions.
Location: River Bluff Weyr
Date: month 3, day 16 of Turn 5

E'rae sat in the corner of the dining cavern, quietly restringing his bow. The strings needed to be properly taut and he had to make sure they wouldn't break. He was going about his work slowly, taking his time. No sense in rushing it and doing it wrong.

R'syl blinked when he spotted the rider out of the corner of his eye. It had been a long time since he'd seen someone working with a bow... On an impulse, he wandered over to the rider with klah in hand. "Going hunting?"

E'rae looked up, his first instinct to glance at the knots. Stopping his hands, he settled and shifted his attention to conversation. "Ah I will be aye. Just getting ready since I happen to have the time at the moment. Do you hunt then?"

"Not for the past few turns." R'syl admitted. "Fall and weyrlings pretty much ruined me for anything recreational. But when I was younger..." he trailed off, shaking his head. Faranth, those had been different times... Back before Usaeth, before even Masair... He offered the rider a lopsided smile. "I used to be a fair shot, before I Impressed."

"Ah well..I admit I definitely was a better tracker before I Impressed, but even these days I'm not too bad." E'rae didn't boast, so what he said was true. It was even possible he was downplaying his true abilities. "Where'd you come from then?"

"Northern Continent. I was a beastcrafter." He grimaced, remembering how different he'd been then, before he'd found Usaeth and then himself. "I specialized in caprines. One of my jobs growing up was to defend the flock."

"Ahha..lovely. Stupid animals on a good day." E'rae grinned. "Well you're welcome to come along sometime if you want." He shrugged. Hunting was better with someone at your back.

R'syl smiled, but shook his head. "I appreciate the offer, but I don't think I'll have the chance. Weyrlings don't allow for much time off."

"Aye but you can't work every single day of your life hm? That's what you have assistants for? Even the Weyrleader has a restday." E'rae shrugged. If the man didn't feel like it was something he needed to do, he could respect that.

"True." R'syl chuckled. "Not even the weyrlings need everyone on duty all the time. I guess I am kind of a workaholic when you look at it that way... Maybe I should try it again sometime. Explaining to Usaeth might be interesting though." He added thoughtfully. "As far as he's concerned the only things worth hunting are wherry and herdbeasts."

"Leith's the same, though he likes to fish as well, but he understands that I enjoy it, so he goes along for the ride." E'rae grinned, sending warm thoughts to his blue.

**Love ya buddy**
}:I know silly:{

"Usaeth will go along with most things too, but I've never had much luck fishing with him. The big lump likes to play in the water and scares all the fish."

"I can imagine so." E'rae held a cloth and began to polish the wood of the bow. "You're welcome to let Leith know anytime you're free. We go pretty often when we can."

"I can't promise anything." R'syl warned. "But I'll certainly keep it in mind. Just don't be surprised if I don't give much notice -I never know when my free time is going to be."

"Aye I understand." He put a hand out for a shake, thinking that appropriate. "I'll leave you to your duties then."

"And I'll let you finish that in peace." R'syl shook the proffered hand with a smile. "I'll see you around."
